The hotel is located very centrally, although somehow not well known so for an out of towner in car it was difficult to find the hotel. The location the hotel is in smells of rotten fish all the time. The hotel being next to an apartment building rendering it with poor view. We had taken the delux room. The room felt a little small as furniture was large sized. The pool was heated and comfortable. Staff was friendly. They have live music in the evenings at the coffee shop. During the day they also do "learn a recipe" counter which was fun. Their seafood restaurant is great. All in all good value for money. What I felt was the best thing was the travel desk. This was the first travel desk where the person at travel desk advised that the beach we wanted to go to was very accessible and can be reached by auto to and fro and said it will cost less than a 3rd compared to using hotel car and ask the security to help us get the auto. Which travel desk would so genuinely be interested in ensuring that customer gets the best value instead of getting lured to using hotel transportation.

In my travels to Mangalore, everyone used to ask which is the best hotel / place to stay in. i was told that there is a TAJ here.
Yes it is cleaner and fancy as compared to all the smaller places in the city, however as a Taj it is just a notch above the Ginger and not really on par with the other Gateway properties in the country.

It is for those who need a clean place to stay at an above average price point.

We stayed at The Gateway, Mangalore for 2 nights and overall the stay was very good. The property is a little old and is under renovation. A little inconvinienced by the work going on in the afternoons. We were booked in a standard room, but on arrival were upgraded to a superior room. Nice gesture on the hotel's part. The room and facilities were good. Being a business hotel, there is not much for children to look forward to in the form a play area expect for the swimming pool. However, the shortcomings are overcome by the excellent 'TAJ' service and hospitality. The staff took excellent care of all our needs. I will surely like to go back. Hopefully the renovation will be done by then and new facilities would be added.

I recently went stayed in this hotel for a business trip. The rooms and corridors of this hotel will give you a feel that it was built in 1920s. Having stayed in the other hotels of the Taj group I certainly felt that this hotel needs renovation.
Although the rooms were good but they were smaller as compared to the other hotels like Goldfinch etc in the same locality. Breakfast was definitely good and had a lot of variety of cuisines. The hotel is pitching itself as a mere restaurant by having various food festivals and not working on the quality of rooms.
Staff was very nice and I liked the fact that the GM of the hotel himself greeted me on my arrival.
This hotel should have been built on a bigger piece of land with bigger parking space and garden in front.
