I returned to India in January of 2011 to once again be treated to more of the wildlife of this great country. Having collectively seen 11 tigers in three game reserves during my visit in 2010, I was determined that 2011 should be the 'Year of the Lion'. And that it was!
But the Gir Birding Lodge accommodations made my great pleasure at seeing these magnificent predateors, the Aisatic lions, just that much more enjoyable. Our room was very neat and cofortable, the beds being especially welcoming after a day of game drives. The large bathroom, with ample electric outlets and shower, was much appreciated as well.
The servants are very accommodating and meals are served promptly three times daily. I found the food quite delicious, emphasizing especially vegetarian dishes (but always having a chicken-based dish as well). A tasty soup appetizer is served before the meal proper. Desert is a sweet, uniqiely Indian treat. The owner was very helpful in using the internet to secure some needed documents for me. Always helpful, friendly service at this lodge.
Just a note on the game drives here. If your vehicle and driver are a bit late for a game drive, nerver fear. The driver and guide seem to be aware of this and will keep you in the park for a longer time to make up for the loss. We saw two big, older male lions together and roaring on a game drive that started more than 30 minutes late. After that experience, I never complained about starting out late again.
The best lion sightings were on day 3 in the evening and day 4 in the morning. There was a lioness with smaller cubs on the day 3 evening drive. The cubs were especially playful as mom, lying down proudly to observe their antics, watched over them. Then there was a lioness with four one-year-old cubs (they were all as big as the mother) the next morning. They stayed within 25 to 50 feet of our vehicle for 15 minutes, all the while watching the two lioness cubs (the size of adults) playing with their very handsome brother, whose mane was filling out very nicely.
In all, we saw 12 lions during our 4 day stay at the Gir Birding Lodge. Simply great!
Indeed, the Gir Birding Lodge has a porfessional, accommodating, firendly, and helpful staff that will make your wildlife tour of Gir Park even more enjoyable and memorable.
