“not even 2 star accomadation”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 July 2010

Not the even near the best resort in candolim. The staff were just ok nothing out of the ordinary and the service was poor to say the least. Anyone wishing to stay in candolim should try the casa seashell in candolim. The food was brillant and the service was superb and also the rooms were clean and presentable at all times.

“Once was enough !!”

This was our fifth trip to Goa so we know that standards are often quite basic and weren't expecting too much. Our room was fine ..... quite basically furnished and (as we've found in Goa) a little short of hanging / drawer space. The bathroom was the usual for a 2 star in Goa, by this I mean that there is no shower enclosure or curtain and the water drains through a glorified hole in the floor .....I like to think of it as a very basic 'wet-room' !!! (One thing I do take with me is a cheap loo-brush as I've never seen one in a Goan hotel) We had a nice little balcony which was perfectly adequate for relaxing with a glass or two of wine (about £2 a bottle from the wine shop nearby )
The rooms were cleaned daily , although not a thoroughly as I'd like ....... the doors/light switches were grubby and the floor was swept around the furniture with the dust left underneath !!! Towels and sheets were frequently changed and although a bit threadbare and off-white they were clean (If you take a drive out to a local laundry and see the colour of the water used for washing you'll see why they aren't white !! )
The pool itself was nice and clean but the area around it was very shabby as were all the public areas. Breakfast was served in the open and was very basic, simply juice, tea/coffee and toast.. There are other choices available at extra cost (the porridge is very good) although don't order if you're in a rush as service is very slow. It's laid back to the point of appearing that the staff couldn't care less and we found this was the norm whatever the time of day. The only exception was late at night when guests were quite drunk and were flashing the rupees.... this seemed to bring on undivided attention whilst hankering after a generous tip !!
Poor service was our main gripe but a close second was the t.v. in reception. More often than not football was blaring out over the music and we could also hear it in our room through the night, Bear in mind that due to the time difference British football was often still showing at 4 a.m.
We had three evening meals at the hotel and the first two were really nice .... the butter naan was the best we've had. The third however was really awful so I'd say the food is a bit hit and miss and wouldn't recommend you rely on it.Overall, it's a cleanish base but I wouldn't stay there again.

“Bloody Fantastic”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 December 2009

I was very nervous about staying here due to reading some of the reviews on here and on other websites. The first thing to note is that I think this hotel as been taken over again and renamed back to the Don Hill resort which is what it was originally called.

When we arrived we were greeted with a complimentary drink and out bags carried to the room. Upon walking up the dark, dingy stair well to the room I was beginning to think that the reviews may be right. However, I can honestly not fault this place. The bedrooms are very basic and have clearly not been decorated in a long time. However, they have everything you need and are spotlessly clean. The bathroom has a good (hot) shower. There is a fridge which costs something like £10 to be unlocked. Then, if required it can be filled with beer and/or water each day - the water costs about 15p a bottle and saves going to the shops to get.

I will also say the all the staff without fail are incredibly friendly and will do anything to help you, or give any advice about the local area.

Each person gets a 2 vouchers per week towards an evening meal in the restaurant. The food served here is some of the best I ate in Goa and certainly worth staying in some nights. The entertainment could be a bit hit and miss but if you cant be bothered to go out for an evening the terrace is a nice place to spend a chilled evening. The standard breakfast is not great - tea or coffee, juice and toast with jam. There is however a full breakfast extras menu and you can have all the usual english stuff - beans on toast, eggs and bacon etc for a pound or two.

I cant comment on the pool area as Im not sure why anyone would want to go there considering that its only a 5-10 minute walk to the beach which is lovely (excluding the ship wreck)

To sum up this is a basic hotel and if you go expecting luxury you will be disappointed. However, considering the price, this place is clean, safe, friendly, in a great area (quiet but not far from the excitement), serves amazing food and is a great place to base yourself from. Will hopefully return next year!

“Fantastic holiday”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 December 2009

My wife & I had stayed here before & were very satisfied but following some bad reviews after new managment we were a bit apprehensive to take one daughter & her children , boy 8 & girl 5.We were given a great welcome, nothing was too much of a problem throughout the hols. Beds made daily, clean towels daily, swimming pool cleaned daily, towels provided poolside.A coconut fell into the pool as our g,child was swimming& the cleaner cut it open & gave it to the kids who were made up!!We are Welsh speaking, so this was of some amusement to the staff.( Most of the English initially thought we were Russian!! Honestly ! I can thoroughly recommend the Hotel. Oh yes, the bar stayed open till the last one left & opened for breakfast. Well it did for one Yorkie!!! Only complaint was that they didn't have clue how to make toast for breakfast. You could have made a wall out of them.
