Rooms – basic accommodation but adequate at a 2 star level. Cleaning could have been better, I put my bag inside the bedside table and it was covered in dust. The room had been finished very badly (taps on wrong way round, windows not able to be closed, toilet seat broken etc). It was impossible to seal the room due to the numerous unclosing window slats, this rendered the air-conditioning unit ineffective and costly to the environment and pocket (not ours thankfully). The room we stayed in 202 had no natural light and there was no way we could dry anything (not really practical on this sort of holiday with wet swimmers). The worst thing we found was that somehow bird (or possibly bat?) faeces somehow got through the rafters and fell onto our bed. After this happened 3 times we knew this was not a one off freak thing. On the plus side there was a plentiful supply of hot water and a large bed.
Breakfast – Found it quite a distressing experience due to the birds jumping everywhere. The food was covered but the birds jumped all over the containers including landing and pecking the serving tongs. They also come into the dining area and if you both leave the table unattended they will land on your plates. Breakfast is continental style which was fine. There is a “comedy” toaster that burns/sets fire to the toast (after closer inspection this is because they cut the bread too thickly). After a few days this was replaced by a 2 slice toaster that still only toasted 1 side and created a massive backlog of would be toasters. There is a menu for cooked breakfast (at extra cost) though you will have to ask to see it and they will reluctantly bring you something. Occasionally someone half heartedly hovers by a BBQ looking like she might cook something. Worst thing was having to bite open the cereal packets – they did not rip open and there was no scissors. Not very pleasant with all the birds.
Other Meals - All a bit fussy and over the top, it was quite usual to be brought entirely the wrong meal or something not as described. The service is slow - be prepared to wait (despite the vast numbers of staff hanging round). For lunch far better to walk round to the cafe on the marina next door where you can get nice less fussy food at a much better price. The Christmas eve meal was good with some great entertainment. However the buffet on Christmas day was disappointing (apart from the Xmas pud) and very expensive for what it was. Also we could not really enjoy it as we were constantly pestered by flies (and the ever present birds) in the midday sun.
General – Lots of small gripes. Such as them running out of pool towels (which annoyingly you have to collect from reception) we had to wait in our room until one was available. Despite 2 phone calls to remind and them promising it had been sent this was ridiculous (especially as the hotel was half full). The pool is OK but small and when there are a few kids in it prepared to get splashed. It is also old and in need of repair (particularly on the bottom). There is seat padding for the pool loungers but sometimes they don’t put them out (we sat a whole day on the sweaty plastic before we realised and none of the numerous staff members offered them to us)
Biggest Disappointment - The inability to swim and or snorkel from the beach. We had come a long way from the UK to Fiji and we were mightily disappointed when we saw the tide out for most of the day. This revealed what can only be described as mud flats for a long way out. OK the tide did come in the afternoon (hence the beautiful pics on their website). However it was very shallow and also quite dirty so not really conducive to a proper swim or snorkel. There were a few beach beds around (about 3) the minuscule beach but they were dilapidated. This meant the only place to hang out during the day was the inadequate and often full of kids pool. Apparently they do offer trips out to some islands from the resort. The water sports staff member could not tell us what islands were visited but did say the trips left at 7.30am (a little early when on holiday?). So if you don’t want to go with the resorts early mystery tour it is a 45 min taxi ride to Denaru marina to join a more organised one.
Overall – This place is fine for a few days. The staff expressed shock when we said we intended to stay 2 weeks. Most people were local (here for a weekend) or tourists staying a couple of nights before going somewhere else. The fussy food, the birdy breakfast, the lack of things to do in the immediate vicinity (apart from the pool) and our dissatisfaction with the place and our room meant we spent 5 of our 13 nights at an island resort (at considerable expense but was definitely worth it).
Tip – Do not use the ATM at the marina. It broke as it was counting our money. We had to wait around 2 hours for someone to come and fix it and then they refused to give us the money and said it would be automatically refunded to our account (which it was), we saw this happen several times. The tour desk (Rosies Travel) in the boutique is very good and they arranged our fantastic island escape from First Landing.
