“Total relaxation, privacy, and a great place to do nothing at all, if you don't want to.”
Spent two weeks here with wife, adult daughter and her husband. Located on a short river between Salt Lake and the ocean, in an idyllic setting. Unit consists of two separated areas, with common kitchen, dining areas, restroom and day shower. There is also another complete bathroom, with solar hot water (nice), lighting, toilets.
Toilets are composting toilets, don't let that scare you, odorless, you just throw in a handful of (provided) grass) when done. Deep sea, lake or river fishing, snorkeling, sightseeing, spearfishing, visit the reefs, go out where the dolphins are, you can do them all. Very gracious and unobtrusive hosts, Andrew can also be your fishing guide, and is very good!! Two resident dogs, Ziggy and Nina, but if you don't like dogs, just tell your hosts.
Some nights the locals would snorkel down the river, with underwater lights, catching their food! Locals would also come by on bamboo rafts with ice chests, tie up by the bridge, then catch the bus to town to shop, return much later, catch the tide back upriver, to their native village.
Salt Lake Lodge is about 15 miles from Savasavu on a mostly paved road, solar powered, some cell phone reception. You have to take the local bus into town at least once, just to say you did it, and do some shopping at the local fresh vegetable markets and other stores. You can buy a brand new machete, fresh pineapples and bananas, other root crops. Taxis are everywhere!! Interesting flight fro Nadi, on a very small airplane. On our return trip, we had 11 international passengers, they had to send a second plane for the luggage. Absolutely relaxing vacation, everyone is on "fiji time". If you want all the amenities, eating American food, etc., there are plenty of other places on the islands. This was exactly what we wanted, did a lot of sightseeing. Without excpetion, Fijians are the friendliest people I have ever met.
Do have Andrew arrange for a taxi to meet your plane, run you into town to get provisions, Andrew or Sonia can tell you what to get.
Do buy mosquito coils at the local store, and bring those sticky paper things for flies. Not a problem, just makes a great experience even better.
Do request that Dee cook for you. We hired her for Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, she does not work weekends, will tell you why. She walks for 1-1/2 miles down the beach and an unpaved road, makes the best banana crepes you ever had. Curried dishes, we ate our own freshly caught fish, and it is only US$15 a day.
Do give Dee a beer or cold drink for her long walk home.
Ask about a lovo before you leave, similar to a luau or hangi, we had chicken, pork, root vegetables, fresh clams, edible seweed cooked on hot stones, Andrew and Sonia joined us, as did Dee and her brother.
