We spent 8 weeks at Han's Place from June through August 2011. We enjoyed everything about our stay at Han's, from his greeting us at the airport to the fresh fruit, flowers and smoothies he provided to us for our stay in Fiji. Han's is a great source of information on Fiji. The Yaka house was exactly as advertised, clean, neat and well maintained. Everything was provided from a well equiped kitchen to a great hot shower and he also did our laundry as needed. The cottage is located in a very peaceful setting a couple of miles from savusavu. You can easily walk to town or you can take an inexpensive taxi that will pick you up at the cottage. However we preferred to take the local bus to experience the "real" Fiji. We loved the people of Fiji and especially those of Savusavu, Vanua Levu. We spent our last month travelling to the islands of Taveuni, Ovalau and the big island of Viti Levu While we enjoyed all of our travels, our fondest memories will be the time we spent on Vanua Levu at Han's Place. If we ever get back to Fiji, we will certainly include a long stay at Han's Place to once again enjoy the beautiful people of Fiji. Thanks again Hans for the wonderful time.

We stayed for approx 2 weeks at Hans' place and found it an excellent base for exploring Vanua Levu. Savusavu town is only a short (and very cheap) taxi ride away, whilst beaches and fantastic snorkling at split rock is only a 10 mins walk away.
Hans was very welcoming and extremely helpful throughout our stay, offering tips on the best places to go and how to get there. His local knoweledge of Vanua Levu really helped get the most out of our trip.
The cottage itself was clean and comfortable - all you could want, at a very reasonable price. If ever I return to Fiji, I would certainly stay there again.

When we started out, we thought 4 months would be a long time but now, 4 months later, we are not ready to leave. Hans' Place turned out to be the perfect place to stay during our Fiji visit. We came here to relax, rejuvenate and explore. Yaka House is quiet and peaceful - we spent many hours on the veranda reading and enjoying the beautiful landscaping. We appreciated reading the books Hans provided about Fiji's history. It is a pleasant walk to the seaside and on the road along the bay.

We enjoyed visiting with the locals at the bus stop and on the beach. The bus/taxi rides to and from town are reasonably priced and provide an enjoyable experience. Hans is very organized and helpful so transportation was always easy to obtain.

Hans is knowledgeable about Fiji and was able to give us good advice about shopping and exploring other areas. We enjoyed many conversations on the veranda and sharing meals in town. Hans' cheerfulness and laugh were always a bright spot in our days.

Jonathan, Hans' son, is a very polite and gracious young man whom we enjoyed. Serah took good care of our laundry and kept the cottage clean. She always checked to see if we needed more fresh coconut.

Hans also provided fresh fruit, papayas, bananas and passion fruit, that was delicious. We really appreciate the fact that everyone, especially Hans, made a point of making sure we had what we needed and were comfortable and happy.

I have spent some two weeks in the Savusavu area in January 2011. I came across from Viti Levu and deliberately decided not to book a place in advance and to play it by ear whether I would feel like some budget, backpacker-type accomodation or whether I could score a good deal at one of the more upmarket resorts.
But when I checked out Hans' Place the decision was an easy one and all plans changed: it is a very leafy space that hit the spot instantly. Situated on the hills surrounding the Savusavu bay it only a few minutes from town and from some of the best snorkelling spots in the area.
The cottages are comfortably equipped with a nice verandas for an extended morning breakfast (paw-paw growing within an arms-reach) or good-night drink or two. The cottages are well separated if you want your privacy, but be prepared to be invited for a chat by the tenants of the other cottage or Hans himself.
I don't dare to reject: Hans struck me as a very interesting story-teller, who is also extremely knowledgable about anything associated to Fiji and willing to make you stay as enjoyable as possible. He will bring Fiji's history alive and understandable, and will also have plenty of tips ready for your travelling plans.
Well, I originally came to check out some of the diving, which I managed to do. But having stayed at Hans' Place I came back with much more than I expected:
a truely memorable stay in Savusavu !

I hope that I can be back at some time, and I can fully recommend this place to anyone staying in the area, who is looking for something other than the typical backpacker or the x-star resort !
However, be advised that there are only two cottages - so booking ahead is a wise thing to do !
