My stay at Makaira and on Taveuni was one of the best experiences in my life. The resort is just wonderfull; great food, fresh fruit every day, beautiful beaches, incredible snorkeling, breathtaking views, cosy housing!
But the real uniqueness of this place is its people . Read the other comments: Roberta, John, Baba, Kristi, they are so genuinely nice and open and helped to make our stay like a visit to great friends.

I loved my entire stay here from the cute cabin with the outdoor kitchen to the lovely staff, wonderful snorkel mistress Roberta, beautiful fresh fruit, proximity to lovely beaches and snorkelling. I found paradise here and vow to return as quickly as I can for more time. There wasn't a moment here that I didn't feel enveloped by the vacation experience I was looking for.

My husband and I are currently at Makaira Resort in the Marlin Bure - we have been here for 5 days and it has been the best vacation we've ever had This place is so relaxing it is like a balm to the soul. Firstly the view from our bure - looking out over a beautiful garden with the ocean below. You can hear the ocean clearly but without the exposure and traffic from boats, beach-goers, etc.. you'd get from being right on the beach. Secondly, for self-caterers, this place is a dream. We have a great little kitchen where we have been cooking our meals. Food is super fresh and easy to get from one of the little towns and the staff are super friendly and obliging for requests for freshly opened young coconuts, greens from the garden and the best papayas you'll ever eat. But if you would rather not cook, the food is delicious and made with love. People treat you like you're family here, not just a guest but you also are given plenty of privacy. The perfect balance of hospitality and creating space for a great vacation.
And lastly the people. Roberta is one of the warmest and most charming hostesses we've come across on our travels. The email exchanges we had before coming were very informative. Right on the first day, she drove us into the little town and showed us the best vendors for fruits, veges and basic groceries. She really took the time to show us around. Not only that but she is an outstanding snorkel guide. I am 5 months pregnant and not very confident in the water but Roberta really took care of my husband and I, making sure we had the right fins and other snorkeling gear. We navigated the reefs around Makaira with Roberta's loving and alert eye, and she made sure we were with her each step.
Special mention to her staff - Kirsti, Roberta's right hand lady who is utterly warm and gracious and to Baba, the manager with the infectious giggle and sweet demeanor. The staff are largely one extended family literally, and the love they share really permeates the atmosphere of this place. They are not just 'staff' and that really what makes this place very special - a true 'cut above' the other resorts where you get the feeling the staff are just employees.

Without repeating all the accolades in the previously posted reviews, I just want to say-it's all true! This is one of the friendliest and most beautiful places I have ever stayed and our 4 nights there were not enough. Roberta, Kristi and her family treated us like very special friends and spoiled us rotten with lovely meals and treats. Kristi and Lucy accompanied my daughter and I on the Lavena Coastal Walk (and saved me from slipping on wet rocks more than once!) They are always smiling and laughing and so pleasant to be around. The extended family invited us to a singalong one night and we had fun taking pictures of the children dancing-we felt like we were part of the family. Roberta is a terrific snorkel guide and is fun and interesting to talk to. The grounds and bures are quite luxurious.
