“Quiet, beautiful, authentic...”

I stayed in Vuna Lagoon Lodge for 3 days. I wanted to do some diving in Taveuni but could not easily find the budget accomodation I needed (as a solo backpacker). I struggled to book this place, and once you get there it's easy to understand why. There is only electricity for 3 hours a day, and no internet! Nevertheless they replied to my emails eventually, and had someone at the airport ready to pick me up as agreed.

The one hour drive down to Vuna, which ends up taking two hours once you account for "fiji time", is very pleasant. Take the opportunity to stop at the town halfway down the island, because resources are scarce beyond that.

The place itself is back to basics, the ultimate little getaway. The view is simply amazing, and it is very remote and quiet. The garden is very well tended to, and has lots of fantastic plants and flowers.

I opted to have my meals cooked, which was the most convenient, but to be honest a little tedious after a while. Overall I wouldn't say I've loved Fiji food but that's no judgement on Senote's skills - more a personal tastebud disagreement with the local habits : )

I went diving with Paradise Taveuni, which are located a good 45 minute walk away, but provide pick up and drop off. I was even picked up for an evening kava ceremony! The diving and resort combination worked well for my budget.

Overall, this is a beautiful, remote, and simple comfort sort of place, so if you're looking for some relaxation and time alone, it's perfect. If you're looking for a party, you've come to the wrong place ; )

“Beyond Paradise”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 November 2008

After getting off the plane at Matai Airport we were greeted by our taxi driver for the one hour drive to Vuna (it is more like 1.5 to 2 hours). The sealed road disappeared after about 15 minutes and the journey began.

On arrival at Vuna Lagoon Lodge the first thing you notice is the quiet ambiance that surrounds you. You are seen to your room and all the basics are covered. Bed, Ensuite, Mosquito Net. Power is generator driven and only available for three hours each night. The communal kitchen is well equipped considering where you are.

Immediately you become mesmerised by the view from the porch and welcomed by the owners as if you have just returned home.

A Couple of things to remember on Taveuni...
1. There is only ONE ATM on the entire island.
2. Any food supplies need to be purchased at one of only three supermarkets that exist on Taveuni.
3. Both 1 and 2 are approximately 1 hour drive from where you are staying.
4. DO NOT BOTHER BRINGING YOUR LAP TOP. Internet facilities are scarce in the southern part of Taveuni.

No aires and graces here. Basic facilities and a respect for your fellow travellers is what is required to enjoy your stay. the common room of the house has a book exchange shelf, the legacy of fellow travellers swapping their reading material for something they have not read. A walk to the village is 10 metres away and the ambiance of little children running around playing games is an experience to cherish.

The Double Room at FJD$70 a night is a bargain. Salote makes most of the meals and it is worth your while getting her to cook whilst you are there. Fish and Curry is very much on the menu most nights, but you know that the boys have caught the fish and the curries are authentic and wholesome.

Snorkelling is at your doorstep but be warned, if you are an avid snorkeller you will need to go out a fair way to see what i can only describe as one of the best coral reefs i have seen for quantity of different corals and fish.

This place is just like living in a village and sharing the experience of a place that has no television, no western influences and no visible signs of anything like the world that most of us are living or accustomed to. Plenty of Papaya's and Coconuts picked fresh from the surrounding trees.

Just down the road from Paradise Taveuni, this place is Beyond Paradise in every way.
