“No Coral Reef”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 February 2012

I go to Egypt half a dozen times per year for the Scuba diving, this hotel has no house reef so is no good for divers or snorkelers, or indeed any watersports as the water is 6" deep (over rock) for 150yds then there is a drop off into the blue with strong currents - It faces Tiran island. There is a stall on the beach selling the services of a dive school based at the Sol Sharm and I found the staff at the dive school excellent but the only trips offered were day boats from Sharks bay or Ras Mohammed which were mainly used by russian snorkelers, if you are a diver you will get what I mean.
The hotel itself was the second worst hotel that I have stayed in around the Sharm area, most of the staff were friendly and helpful and the food was tasty and there was lots of choice, but it was the same choice every day.
If you like your drink then no all inc hotel in Egypt is any good as all the local drinks taste the same - of petrol.
We went out of the hotel into Soho square or Naama Bay most evenings as the entertainment and general atmosphere is that of a 70s' Butlins camp, the place has no soul.

“Very nice clean hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 February 2012

We travelled here in November 2011 very worried about what it would be like after reading some bad reviews. However, we were very pleasently surprised by the hotel

God points- The rooms are very spacious and clean. The pool area is lovely and the beach is stunning and never too busy.

It is excellent value for money. People must be turning up and expecting the Ritz... unfortunately if you want the Ritz you have to pay Ritz prices. We got alot for what we payed, Neither of us had food poisoning during our stay

Excellent beer. Always cold and as much as you want! For a reasonable fee on the last night we booked the 'romantic meal' where we had our own table on the beach. It was lovely and well worth the extra money. The food was slightly better than usual aswell!

We were expecting to get harassed to buy things. However this was never the case. THe sales people were never too pushy and a polite no did the trick, The cleaning staff were fantastic. The room was spotless everyday and a great amount of effort was taken.

NB its worth getting a pool facing room, much better view.

Bad points- The food is as bad as some reviews state. I am the least fussy eater I know. However, I found most of the food in the main restaurants inedible. It was trully awful which is why I haven't given this 5 stars. Every British person we spoke to thought the same although the Russians seemed to lap it up. It was shockingly bad and I survived off sweet pastries when I ate in the main restaurants. It is worth noting the cocktails aren't cocktails like you'd expect over here. They are juice with some spirits in them

The BBQ restaurant was OK. Small portions but if you ask them they will bring more out for you. Italian was the best- actually pretty good pizzas. The seafood place was a ncie setting but poor food and I'm a seafood lover. It is worth booking a restaurant every night to avoid the slop in the main restaurant.

Overall- we had a great stay. Superb value for money. Good staff. Clean and safe. The only fault is the food.

“Absolutely Discusting! Please ,please, please do not even consider of going there”

Please save your money and do not book your holiday here.We booked it through www.travelrepublic.co.uk as a five star hotel for out 2 week holiday for Christmas and my daughters first birthday. On arrival was soooo disappointed. The place was at the most a 3star ,rather than 5 as I was suggested. It looked like a cheap and really dated place. The food absolutely discusting and I was so disappointed I had to feed all this sh..t my little kids. Also, the cot provided to my toddler!!!you should have seen the state of it!the bottom had completely follen out, staff to fix it however I am 100% sure done it first time in their lifes. After it was supposedly fixed it was all soo ueaven and unstable.I was not brave enough to put my toddler in it.Kids playing are...please...it looked so uncared for,so filthy and discusting, deffinately not like a place I would like my child to play in.There is just too much to list...
Since it was Christmas day I knew that travlerepublic did not operate on the day I sent an email saying that I am not happy with the place and in no way am willing to spend there 2 weeks, requested to be contacted immediately, sent another email the next day.Still no responce.Waited one more day (so spent 3 days in total in this sh...place) and simply could not wait any loneger and waste my holidays so simply transfered to anothe much better, cleaned and safer place.AA Amwaj was very rude and every singel time I tried to express my concerns about it.There were so many people complaining to them aabout everything:food,facilities..etc..so please help yourselves and simply book another place to have an enjoyable holiday. Please also do not rely on www.travelrepublic.co.uk or their star rating. It's all one huge lie!!!!!

“Great Holiday”

My wife and I stayed at the Amwaj from 7 Jan for a week, Staff were amazing so friendly and very helpful and nothing is to much trouble for them. Room: well equiped most comfortable bed we have ever slept in, clean and well maintained. Food: plentiful and hot and a good choice. Restaurant: sometimes hard to get a table and drinks not served at the table for evening meals. but all very clean. Pool: Very inviting but was cold but it was January but there is a heated pool. pool staff are fantastic as they can not do enough for you i,e Walid the pool attendant even put our towels down for us as we went for breakfast the bar staff even tell you to sit down and they bring your drinks to you.

Tipping: the pool attendant and bar staff are very greatful if you tip them and are happy to be tipped in with either a sterling pound coin or small egyptian pounds they really work hard.

Looking forward to returning to the Amwaj.

“100% honest review”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 February 2012

I have just got back from 1 week at the aa amwaj and as with almost every hotel was a little concerned after reading some reviews on trip advisor, however would have to say that overall those reviews are not justified.

all the staff were polite and helpful, i had a cake sent to my room on my birthday and the room decorated even though we did not inform them it was my birthday! the food was of a good standard, the buffett restaurant was as youd expect a hotel of that standard but i must say the restaurants you had to book for exceded our expectations, the fish at the fishermans restaurant was amazing! and the lunch buffet there was also the best lunchs were there, also the italian restaurant was lovely ( we actually went here twice not sure if your supposed to?) neither of us went to get drunk every night but did drink cocktails a few times and would say they was not watered down.

as we went in january there was never any queues at the bar or searching for sunbeds which was a plus, the reports about the pool being cold are true(although im sure this isnt the case in the summer) but this didnt stop us going in when it was a really hot day. The staff even brought round the drinks without us ordering any by the pool as they werent busy. The entertainment staff were very good at keeping the guests entertained and any children that were there. Some reports were complaing about being hassled round the pool asking if you would like to go on trips etc. We booked several trips through these guides(easy divers) however even though the orientation meeting will try to persuade you not to, we booked scuba diving and camel/quad rides in the desert through them and it was both cheap and the best days of our holiday!

The only small complaints I had was that we had a twin room on arrival and had to pay for to be changed even though we stated double room on booking, the hotel and grounds are kept very tidy however I would say the cleanliness wasnt great our bed was made but never changed in the whole week we were there and the bath didnt look like it had been cleaned. I wasnt a massive fan of the breakfast as id say this was definetely aimed more towards europeans than english but my boyfriend who isnt fussy loved it. We went to namma bay once and hated it because you really do get hassled and they were quite rude and aggressive and the men were quite sleazy everywhere we went making comments, these were the only down sides to the holiday but overall we loved it and the amwaj is very good value for money.
