I stayed at the Red Sea Holiday Village with my partner, 9 year old son and 6 month old daughter for a 2 week AI holiday. We had read the mixed reviews and were a little aprehensive about taking a young baby but we shouldn't have worried as we had a fantastic time.
The airport was a little scary when we arrived, our baby girl had to have her temperature taken before we were allowed through but the airport staff dealt with it well and it was over in 5 minutes.
My partner and son required a visa and so we got these from the visa office just inside the terminal rather than queuing with all of the other holiday makers. The visas are also slightly cheaper (£10 each)
We arrived at the hotel and were checked in smoothly and quickly. It was nice not to have to worry about our luggage as this is taken to your room for you. We were shown to the restaurant to have dinner before going to our room which was very welcome after a long day.
Our room was fantastic. We booked a family room with a kids den as we wanted our son to have his own space. It was extremely clean and spacious and the bed was enormous. We didnt have any complaints about it being too hard. The cleaner kept it spotless and always left us plenty of bottled water.
The location of our room was perfect. We were in block 10 on the ground floor. We were overlooking the quiet pool and so it didnt take much effort to take all our stuff to the pool every morning! We did hear of a few people in the notorious block 14 and it sounds like it really is quite bad.
We spent most of our time at the quiet pool as we dont really like the hustle and bustle of the main pool (and we did find the guests more like minded at the quiet pool!)
The service here was great, the towel guy Hassan was superb, always looked after us and never expected a tip. I would like to point out that getting a sunbed was never a problem and the issue of "reserving" sunbeds is not through favourtism but down to the fact you are each given a card at the start of your stay which you then hand over to the towel staff to reserve your bed.
The pool bar staff were also very helpful. We didnt tip until the end of our stay but still found them extremely friendly and they were happy to bring drinks over without being asked.
The Wellness team were around the pool a lot trying to sell the treatments but we did not find them rude or overbearing. I had a massage and body scrub as it was my birthday which was lovely and very reasonably priced. I was not pressured into booking and every time we were approached we just said no and were left alone.
The beach was great. Dont go expecting lots of deep white sand though as it is more like gravel on concrete. However this did not take away from its stunning views. It always appeared quiet and we always managed to get a hammock bed regardless of what time we got there. The sea is very shallow and there are lots of fish to see. The pontoon is a lovely walk and perfect for snorkling.
The main buffet restaurant had a wide variety of food and was better than other AI buffets we have been to. No there is not bacon or pork sausage but it is a muslim country so what do people expect? We ate the salads which were excellent and didnt make us sick, the pizza and pasta were great and the puddings and pastries were amazing. It did get a bit like a free for all sometimes and it amazes me how much certain people eat "because its all paid for."
The restaurant was themed every night which ensured there was always something different .
We ate in the three al a carte restaurants and found the service good, the wine nicer than in the bars and it made a nice change to have your food brought to you. The choice on the menus was a little limited but we all managed to find something. Our son also ate off the main menu as he finds it quite insulting to be offered nuggets and chips!
They did get booked up very quickly so I would advise you plan your restaurants early on!
The nicest restaurant by far was the sea food restaurant on the beach (not part of the AI)
We chose our fish before we sat down and the staff tell you exactly how much it will cost so you dont get any nasty suprises! It was extremely cheap and the whole experience was fantastic.
There were a few bad bits to our holiday, the mosquitos were dreadful! They dont normally go for me but I was bitten A LOT. This seemed common throughout the resort and no amount of repellent seemed to make any difference. The hotel sprayed the gardens every night with insecticide so I dread to think what it would be like if they didnt!
The First Choice entertainment was non existant. Although they were enthusiastic the shows were very poor. The best of the entertainment was when members of the audience took part. The entertainment is also quite spread out. Some is in the main block and some is in the ampitheatre. Both venues are great and I dont think First Choice are using them to there full potential.
We also had a problem with the First Choice reps when it came to booking the zip wire. We were told we could turn up and book for the day that we wanted but in fact when we went to book we were told it was full for that day and we would have to go back every morning to see if there was space...sorry but we did not want to spend every morning of our holiday queuing on the off chance that we could get our son a go on the zip wire. (we got him on eventually at 8pm when everything was dark)
On the whole the Red Sea Holiday Village is an ideal place for an all inclusive family holiday. The food and drink is not five star but perfectly adequate, the rooms are excellent and the grounds beautiful. There is a butlins feel on occasion in the buffet restaurant, around the main pool and the evening "entertainment" but it by no means spoils the holiday.
The Egyptian staff have a far far better level of customer service than the First Choice staff and really go out of there way to help you. They love children and bent over backwards to make them feel welcome. We were not hassled for tips and were not treated any differently when we didnt tip.
On my birthday we were asked if we would like a cake which was sent to the beach bar that afternoon.(along with a lot of singing and dancing!) A lovely touch that I saw the staff do a few times.
We are returning to this hotel in April and we cant wait.
Please feel free to ask me any questions regarding this hotel or taking a young baby there.
