We're poor students, and booked this holiday last minute last year without reading anything about it - we were drawn in by the price (a steal at £500!) and only got round to reading customer reviews after we'd parted with our money. We were subsequently petrified, as some of the things that are written on here are borderline ridiculous, and also completely untrue. I'd like to set a few things straight!
We weren't expecting an English-standard 5* resort - you pay £500 for flights, a weeks accomodation AND food and it doesn't take a genius to know that you're hardly going to be pitching up at the Ritz. That being said, we were received very kindly by hotel staff, our rooms were immaculately clean, and the pool areas and sea view were absolutely beautiful. We struck up a friendship with our housekeeper, who made us animals out of our towels every day - we loved that!!
Food could sometimes be a little bit trying for me - I'm a vegetarian - but there was always something edible there. There's also an Italian restaurant, just off from the main restaurant, which is free of charge but you have to book to eat there. The standard of food was a little better in there. There is also a fantastic pizza oven at the lunchtime restaurant. The pizzas were small but wonderful, and there was always an enormous queue for them, so get there early!
We decided to go on a safari trip which was run out of the hotel; we all used quad bikes and went on a three hour trip through the desert. It was completely beautiful and well worth doing.
The weather was incredible (we were there in September) and we took advantage of one of the massages at the beginning of the week that promises to enhance your tan, which it seemed to do very well! My only small gripe about this holiday were the people who'd bother you at the poolside. I understand that it's their job to sell things like massages, hair braiding, manicures - but we said no on more than one occasion. One member of our party was gay and came under a lot of scrutiny from the Egyptian reps and sales people who were quite rude to him, telling him that 'you can take a pill for that' etc. Luckily, he's the kind of guy who quite easily laughs that sort of thing off, but I found myself getting angrier every time it happened, although I understand that its a cultural barrier more than anything else.
Overall, we had a fantastic holiday. I wouldn't go there if you're concerned with making English friends - there were only a handful of us there - but if its sun, a pool and a comfy bed you're after, make the most of how cheap this place is. I'd stock up on alcohol in duty free though... the Egyptian stuff absolutely rips your stomach!
Room Tip: Ask for a sea view - you wont be disappointed!
