“Has great potential but we won't be going back.”

Our holiday didn't get off to the best of starts when we were told not to take our cases to our room, as a porter would bring them. After sitting in our room for an hour we were still waiting! I phoned customer relations and they said they were on their way......nothing, I went to the lobby and spoke to a manager who phoned someone else and we were told they were outside our room, but that there was no need to go to the room as they would be perfectly safe. Not believing him and not wantring to leave our cases outside our room, we walked all the way back to our room........nothing! Went back down and spoke to a different 'manager' who spoke to someone else on the phone and assured us that they were now outside our room and lo and behold they finally arrived. We'd been on the go from 3am, why not just let us take our own cases? It's a useless system and badly needs to be addressed. We went off season, god only knows what mayhem this creates in the summer!
Another big downside is that there is a lot of work going on and we were woken at 8am by workmen outside our room hammering away with a sledge hammer and chisel!
They also don't supply taxis on demand. One overcast day we decided to go to Hurghada and asked for a taxi. When asked what time, we said now please. He just shook his head, laughed and said it would be at least an hour!
If you are expecting orange juice at breakfast forget it, they only supply squash, very poor.
I know Egyptian standards are not the same as ours, but how they can call this a 5 star is frankly ridicolous.
On the plus side it is kept extremely clean, has a good choice of a la cartes if you have paid the extra beforehand. Regular AI only lets you eat in an a la carte once a week but we were contacted before we left and offered a free pass for £35 which was well worth it.
We found all the staff extremely polite so don't understand those that say they are all rude, couldn't be further from the truth in our experience. Mahmood in the Mexican is very nice and the waiter in the lobby bar (can't remember his name sorry) always looked after us. We never had to wait for a drink, he would see us ok every night, brilliant service.
Also met lovely people from Yorkshire and a delightful couple from Norway on our last night, really good company, so if you happen to read this Ingrid, hope you both enjoyed the rest of your holiday and the weather improved!
All in all a pleasant break but too many issues, although a nice holiday all the same.

“More of a 3* than 5*”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 February 2012

Just got back from this hotel after a 10 day stay. Arrival was speedy we were given was a spacious family room which overlooked the heated family pool (block 35). The room itself was clean but the finish of the fixtures and fitting were quite tired. Beds large and comfy, balcony also spacious but really it was too cold to sit out there for any amount of time.

The staff were friendly and hard working, the odd one or two let themselves down, especially in The Lobby area. With 7 al a carte restaurants to choose from we were really looking forward to dinning but to be honest its no where near 5* standard. The Asian was by far the best, the Bediun was quite novel but the food not fantastic, the Italian was ok, pasta nice but portions very very small. The Mexican was the most disappointing, both in terms of food and service. The main buffet had lots of choice but again don't expect 5*, much more of a 3. The drinks were fine also.

The two heated pools were warm enough most days and our daughter (7) enjoyed them as much as possible. It was nice that they didn't start giving out towels until 10am as this meant no rush in the mornings to get a sunbed and these were always available. The beach is clean and the water shallow and child friendly.

We used the kids club as our daughter made a few friends who were going most days. The girls aren't the most dynamic but you did feel the children were happy and well looked after. The rep Mohammed seemed a little demoralised, we didn't use him really but there seemed to be a steady flow of people generally complaining. The evening entertainment was a bit hit and miss and seemed to be on a 7 day rota so by day 8 we weren't going anymore.

There were a lot of sales people around but they always moved on if you said 'No thank you' or had a red flag up. We did do a boat trip through Blue Waves and it was a good day, very windy on the way out but the way back was lovely. We stopped to snorkel twice and had a hour on an island, food was not great but the crew were helpful and seemed quite happy.

All in all we enjoyed our stay but wouldn't return, mainly because the standard is not 5* and everything became very repetitive very quickly but at the price paid you can't really expect much more.

Room Tip: Family rooms in block 35 nice

“Nice holiday - dont book Thomas Cook”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 February 2012

we booked this holiday 3 weeks before we went through Thomas Cook (holiday 31st Jan- 7th Feb). We were fully aware of the two types of All Inclusive before we booked and had seen on trip advisor that TC guests were getting the Ultra and use of the ala carte restaurants. We booked the holiday believeing we had booked the ultra AI and 2 weeks later received a letter from TC stating that they wanted another 70 pounds to have access to the ala cartes. After a alot of arguing we eventually paid 40 pounds extra which wasnt a good start.
You are told on the plane by TC staff that you have to pay $18 for your visa and there are people there in the terminal herding and shouting at passengers to get their visas. The truth is if you look to your left there is a row of bank stalls and you can pay them $15 per visa. Dont follow the crowd - just use the banks and save some money.
The hotel is very large and there is nowhere to go outside the hotel. You can get a taxi/shuttle bus in the lobby area from the hotel into Hurghada which costs 7 euro each return. Hurghada was not a very nice place with the usual tacky shops - fake bags etc.
We had a family room in block 10 overlooking the pool. Main buffet restaurant very noisey and busy - after first night we ate in the al a cartes each night which were all very good. Visited the Italian twice - very good, Chinese, Arabian & Steak restaurants - good, The around the world restaurant is less busy for breakfast. The beach is nice and the beach next door (Fort Arabesque) is excellent for snorkelling - you can see all the fish just off the beach. The only thing is you cant take any towels or anything with you as the guard will blow his whistle at you!!
Did get chilly in the evening so we had a jumper to put on and only two main pools heated and two childrens pools heated.but the sea was fine for swimming. No problems getting sunbeds - the hotel didnt seem full. A man walks through the pool area around 10 am selling yesterdays newspapers - wanting 40 eygtian pounds per newspaper!!
Staff very friendly and gave good service and most of all no tummy troubles.
There was an internet cafe in the lobby, 3 pounds for 30 minutes, each computer had a web cam to allow skyping. There are some shops attached to the hotel - one sold eygptian papyrus type pictures bartered the shop owner down from 300 to 100 Egyptian pounds, but found these pictures in numerous shops in the Hurghada airport terminal on the way home and they were only priced up at 3-5 euros.

Overall we had a lovely holiday, but will not be booking any more holidays through Thomas Cook.

Room Tip: For the summer ask for Block 10 this a complex of blocks surrounding a lovely large freeform pool wi...

Just a short review as there are so many for people to read. Right here goes.

We have travelled around the world and have a good degree of experience as travellers, in recent years with a child. I know this hotel has not suited everyone but that's the law of the world. For us it was brilliant. We were treated exceptionally well, ate well and respected other nationals staying along side us. We have a good imagination therefore thoroughly n joyed the food, particularly the Bedouin or as our boy called it, pouffs restaurant as these are the seats you sit on. The Asian was also fantastic. Tried all except the Greek as heard it was 'just ok'. Staff are fantastic this ranges from front of house right across to Green team etc. Used Spa and found this great. Tipped in US Dollars, Euros and Egyption. Room was great and very clean (block 15).

We do plan to return and hopefully bring friends and family. Would like to thank front of house manager, Hassain Lofty (i hope this is correct!). He enabled us to have a perfect family holiday. Met some nice people, 2 in particular who will know who they are if they read trip advisor reviews (bum wash!!!!!!!!!).

Looking forward to returning to Sunrise Makadi Resort.

“YOU WONT GET DRUNK”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 February 2012

just got back from two weeks here, hotel very big but very nice. food reasonable, rooms spacious and clean and comfortable. entertainment team were fab, aerobics every day and a show most nights and they do try very hard to keep you entertained. some of the public areas are a bit grubby and there is a lot of work going on there at the moment. the sun beds on the beach are the best out of the constant wind. my biggest problem was trying to get a drink we had paid for ultra all inclusive which includes premium drinks but they dont like serving them and the restaurants are ok but not great i would say Asian was best. we normally go to Cancun but said we would try Egypt for a change now dont get me wrong we paid half the price of Cancun so i do think it is good value for money overall. but i would not call it a 5 star and when you come out of the complex it is like a war zone with all the rubbish and derelict buildings. The one other thing i would say is that the waiting staff are a nuisance pestering for tips all the time. think i will be trying somewhere else next year

Room Tip: askfor aroom near the beach
