We stayed at the Mamlouk for 7 days from 27th Jan 2012. This is a gorgeous hotel and the staff are fantastic, but there are things English visitors need to be aware of. Bad things first......
Food! Now, we are not foodie snobs and will give anything ago, but the food served here is defiantly not 4*, more like 2*. There is hardly anything in the buffet that I enjoyed, though the occasional thing was ok. I would expect traditional cuisine and expected fresh/grilled fish being on the menu (especially as we are on the red sea). However, I think the majority was catered for the eastern European guests. Breakfast is particularly bad, with meatballs and stew on the menu. I would expect continental at least. I had banana butties with bread rolls taken at dinner for breakfast in my room (Bread was nice ad fresh).
Also, please, please check with your travel agent before you put any cash down that you are on the ULTRA ALL INCLUSIVE package. This will enable you to use the restaurants if you wanted. Thomas Cook tried to con us on this one, especially as (being 6 months pregnant) it was made very clear to the agent that I wanted the use of the hotels and with assurances that these where included, only to get a phone call the morning before telling us to pay more as this was a "upgrade".
Saying that, I do question the hotels Chef's knowledge on international cuisine. They have clearly not been to or tasted Chinese, Italian or Mexican dishes as the restaurants are advertised. The best restaurant was the Asian (although i would still debate the name of the "Chinese" dishes). The staff and manager where faultless. I doubt any of the chefs have actually tasted any of the cuisines that they are trying to produce, rather seen pictures in a book and did their take on it. This seems to be the case with all the restaurants/food served. The Mexican is particularly bad (who grills cheese onto lettuce??? any self respecting cook knows this will only turn into slime on a plate!!).
The same can e said for the pool/beach bars. There are 1 sandwich and 1 pizza option every day. This gets very boring and more variety would be nice. Especially at the beach bar. But again, the staff at the beach bar (where we spent the majority of the time) where wonderful, very polite and friendly.
Included in the ULTRA all inclusive package was access to international brands (Alcohol) however although this didn't apply to me (Baby), my husband did not see any international brands at all and there is only one type of beer, which he stated was quite nice but weak.
The other European gusts manners where questionable, but not intolerable. It just makes our smiles and manners go further with the staff. This is the worst over!
Good stuff......
There are plenty of excursions that can be booked through Thomas Cook. We went on the shop n rock which is well worth ago.
Will start at the beginning...
Hotel reception/lobby = very clean, friendly staff and gorgeous décor. Easy check-in
Pool/bar/grounds = grounds are gorgeous, very well kept, Never went into the heated pool (other pool being refurbished) but was always busy and looked nice and clean with plenty of beds.
Room = gorgeous, big and clean with a huge bathroom and walk-in shower. cleaner did a fab job every day.
beach/bar = (where we spent much of our time) The beach is lovely and clean, always beds available, Make sure you pick up a red flag at the towel hut to keep the hawkers at bay.
Spa = fantastic, we used this twice. Had the cleopatra treatment with the hubby on the second day honeymoon style (in the same room together), and a full body massage later in the week. I cant recommend the spa enough!Even being 6 months preggers, the masseuse knew what to do and made us feel fantastic after our treatments.
A side note to mention is there is no free wi-fi at the hotel, there is a charge of 90 EL for 2 days use but the signal is primarily for use within the hotel reception however you can pick it up around the resort and on your balcony etc.
