We stayed at the Desert Rose as part of a package tour group from 31 Dec 2011 - 2 Jan 2012. The resort looks beautiful and all the pools are lovely but it does not live up to the expectations. Language was also a barrier as very few of the staff can converse in English (they only speak Arabic or Russian).
Firstly, we were travelling as a married couple and we get booked into a room with two single beds. No problem as our guide sorts this out for us. We then get transferred to another room but this is part of a family room so we can hear the person on the other side through the interleading door so not private but we leave it at that as we already moved rooms. Also, our room is on the ground floor and while looking at the little patio outside, we notice that the door cannot lock. Luckily after a 30min or so wait, an engineer/handy-man comes to fix it as the hotel clearly states that they will not be held liable if anything goes missing from your room so we did not want to take a chance with our belongings.
We then noticed that there is no hot water. We assume it is a geyser problem as everyone might be showering at the same time although we did log it with the front desk ("maintenance will be there in 5 min" which became an hour so we stopped waiting). The water issue continued for another entire day and after many complaints and supposed reassurances from the front desk ("it will be fixed shortly", "an engineer will come to look at it" which never happened or "it will be repaired upon your return from the day trip") about the cold water, our guide eventually managed to get us moved to a room with hot water (it was winter at the time so the temperatures were quite cold outside so a cold shower is really unpleasant).
The next morning, I could not get the safe open and called reception. They said they can only send someone to me at 4pm in the afternoon - expecting me to wait an entire day to get my wallet, etc out from the safe. I mentioned that this is absurd and after a while, eventually a manager came to assist.
Also, we were booked ALL INCLUSIVE. Therefore all meals, snacks and local drinks are included. There are many little hidden costs here so double check everything.
The food in the main restaurant is okay - there is a large variety (I suggest the falaffel for a taste of Egypt during the breakfast buffet) but you feel as if you are in a school hostel. When having your meals, dont eat in the food halls, rather go to the outside section as it has a more tranquil and restaurant-type setting.
We also went to the Italian restuarant (which you have to pay for) but did not mind as we wanted a break from the buffet queues and something a little more special and intimate. We tried to order the local drinks (which were supposed to be included in our package and therefore no extra charge) but the waiter said no, all the drinks here must be paid for even though our booklet on arrival stated otherwise. He could not really speak English so arguing the point was useless. We then ordered a bottle of wine; they did not have it and only had an expensive wine so we had order it. Also, we tried to order some starters but they did not have stock (we were the only couple in the restaurant as well). Our mains arrived: my husband's pizza base was completely raw. They took it back to the kitchen and we stated we want the same pizza but they must bake it for a bit longer. After 15 min, the manager said they will make a new pizza. Eventually, I already completed my meal and we were waiting for another 30min and decided that we'd rather call it an evening and forget about the pizza. When getting the bill, they wanted to charge us for the pizza. When we started to get a bit annoyed, they brought the new pizza out a a take-away. What a waste of a perfectly good evening! I can understand that they had no other guests.
Entertaiment: Although they have good dancers, I felt like I was in the Twilight Zone watching a New Years Eve concert where dancers are still performing to the Spice Girls and Men in Black. Seriously...
This resort only seems to really cater for their Russian clientele and not the rest of the travelling community. I am sure there are far better resorts than this 1000+ room hotel.
