“It says Holiday Inn on the tin . . . but thats about it!”
This is the second review I've written on this hotel. The first seems to have disappeared. It was probably reported to the site admins as it hit on a number of the hotels sore points quite hard.
I revisited this hotel for a one night stop over between Hurghada and Hamata. Thankfully it was only one night.
First time I went here, I had issues with towel cards that went missing. The reception wanted a fine of $40 for loss of the towel cards. They were very rude telling me I should take more care of them etc. At this point I demanded to see the manager. He was not available, in fact he was not available during the entire stay. In the end, I waited in the reception defiantly. The receptionist on duty, who had been very rude to me, finally gave in, and produced the cards from behind the desk. It would therefore appear that the fine was not for loss, more a charge for a return. As I left reception, he muttered something about taking more care. I had to bite my lip and not react. It makes Fawlty Towers look like the Hilton. I actually wrote to the Holiday Inn about this incident, but I received no response.
Upon my most recent visit, I booked using my Priority Club number, as I use this a lot for work. It should get you a quick check in and a room upgrade etc. Ideally, I would not stay here again, but it offers a convenient stop over point, an hour outside of Hurghada.
Upon arriving at the hotel it, appeared they had no knowledge of the booking. They demanded I show them the reservation document, which I only had electronically on my Iphone email. It appeared this was not sufficient. I had to have it on paper. They offered me internet access to download it and print it out (but I would have to pay for this service). There appeared to be confusion as to what the room rate was. I got the distinct impression there was some sort of scam going on here. Finally when I kicked up a fuss, they miraculously produced the reservation document from the system. This had my name, priority number, room rate etc. Why was their such hassle when they already had the details.
The next hurdle was getting them to add the shuttle transfer cost from the airport to the room bill. It appeared cash was preferable . . . I'll leave the rest to your imagination.
Even in the short period between stays here, it is noticeable how the hotels interior has suffered. Chipped doors, tired furniture etc.
To conclude, if you want to go to Safaga for diving or a stopover, this is a convenient basic hotel. But do not expect Holiday Inn standards.
