“Another Perfect Holiday”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 February 2012

El Gouna is hasel free and relaxing with a wonderful climate from Oct to Apr. This was our 3rd visit and it lived up to our past experience. There is accommodation to suit all tastes and pockets but our firm favourite is the Sultan Bey Hotel. Whilst it was one of the first to be built in El Gouna, about 30 years ago, and some parts are looking a little tired, it has so much to commend it that it rates as our favourite. The staff from the Manager through to the gardeners are extremely friendly and polite, and those that serve the guests do everything to ensure an enjoyable holiday - nothing is too much trouble. Food is buffet style with a very wide choice for breakfast and dinner. We stay on half board and have been more than happy with the food. For a change, we use the "dine around" feature which lets you dine at other hotels with a voucher or have the occasional meal in a local restaurant. Sultan Bey is ideally located on a lagoon but only about 5 min walk to Tamar Henna, the square in Downtown, where there are shops restaurants, and banks with ATMs. The Hotel boat ferry runs regularly to the beach and sea at Zeytouna island. The 115 rooms are in 5 blocks of interesting arabian style which are built around lovely gardens and many with lagoon views. The complex is compact with easy access. Rooms are large and spotlessly clean with good storage, free safe and free Air Con/heating. They have good ensuite, mini bar fridge, and flat screen TV with satelite channels. Rooms have balconies with chairs and table. The hotel will organise airport transfer at reasonable cost. For us, Hotel Sultan Bey represents excellent value for money and provides our preferred holiday accommodation in El Gouna.

“Disappointing”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 February 2012

We stayed here as part of a cruise and stay. We did a Nile Cruise for the first week with Discover Egypt on the Royal Viking which was fabulous - great staff, amazing boat and fabulous food. Having said that, although the sights were amazing, we were relieved we hadn't opted to stay in Luxor. Historical and interesting it might be, but it's also a dirty, smelly dump. Maybe our expectations were too high after our experiance of the Royal Viking, but we were really disappointed when we arrived at the Sultan Bey after a 5 hour transfer across the desert. The rooms were really basic for a 4* hotel. The air-con wasn't very effective, and the beds were like something you'd expect from a 2* hotel. The food was below standard - we never saw dishes being thrown away, merely "topped-up" which makes you wonder how long some of it had been sitting there. We had better food from a 3* hotel in Benidorm.

The resort is soul-less with no real vibe about it. We had made friends with a number of people while we were on the cruise. Half of us were staying at the Sultan Bey and the others at the Three Corners Ocean View (which is a far far better hotel). Now what was really annoying is that every section of beach is allocated to a certain hotel. The Sultan Bey's is really scruffy but our friends weren't allowed on it as they had their hotel wrist bands on. Their beach was nicer, though we weren't allowed on it as we weren't staying at the same hotel! So basically, we struggled to spend time with our friends during the day.

The dine-around scheme was an absolute joke. The credit you're given doesn't even nearly cover the standard price of a meal in any of the restaurants. We tried the Morrocan on the harbour one night and the food was crap. Cold, undercooked and tasteless. I've had better African food in England.

Save your money and go to Cyprus - you just can't compare.

“Good value for money”

A very relaxing atmosphere. An extremely good breakfast. The architecture of the building and the gardens are beautiful.
