We had read reviews that the Sound & Light Show at Abu Simbel was considered to be the best in Egypt and so we really had no choice but to stay at this hotel. All in all the Sound & Light show made our one night stay sufferable. It was spectacular, so much so that we bought the Dvd for 160 egyptian pounds.
The hotel has huge potential - stunning location on the banks of Lake Nasser, good design and architecture and pretty landscaping. The rooms all seem to have a view of the lake. Our two rooms on the ground level looked so appealing from the outside. What a disappointment to find the inside dark, dismal and sparsely furnished. Our room had a damp and stale smoky odour, the sole curtain on the sole window barely hanging on the rail and the sole carpet in need of a good clean. The hairdryer in the bathroom didn't work as the electrical connection had pried itself loose and the one in my teenagers' room only worked if it was held firmly into the dilapidated plug point. The linen on the beds had us highly amused, although clean, the bottom sheet only covered 3/4's of the bed. We were dreading dinner but were pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food and the service from the staff inside the restaurant. The restaurant was full of tour groups and we were given a review to fill in at the end of dinner. Perhaps this explained the excellent meal, because breakfast and service the following morning was poor. We've never had to stand in a queque to pour our own coffee in any hotel claiming to be four or five star.
