“Don't know what people are complaining about!”

After reading the negative reviews l wasn't sure whether to go to the Admiral or not but as l was booking with first choice, who had never let me down before, l took a chance. When we arrived at Pula airport there were loads of coaches waiting & l have to admit that l was having second thoughts when we were put on a mini bus with 2 other people (who turned out to be going to another hotel). The journey took about 1 hr 40minutes but the scenery was fantastic, not at all what l imagined. The hotel looked nice & i assume that the 2 receptionists that greeted us were the ones that other writers had said were rude. They weren't all smiles and did come across as abit abrupt however they did wish us a pleasant stay and insisted that someone bought our bags up to the room. We thought that this was a way to get extra tips but we were wrong, my husband answered the door and l was getting some money to give him but he didn't wait. He literally brought the luggage and left. The room was clean & spacious and we overlooked both the harbour and the sea and the views were really spectacular. Everyone we spoke to said the same about the rooms, the size, the view & the cleanliness. However we did all have the same complaint - the beds! Both the beds and the pillows could do with replacing. They are definitley not the most comfortable that l have slept in.The hotel is ideally situated, more or less on the seafront but if you are looking for a nice sandy beach, don't come here, Its concrete but there are plenty of sunbeds and shades to be hired. The water is very clean but there are some parts that are rocky but you know before you go in which parts they are. The hotel has its own seawater pools. One indoor (also with a jacuzzi) and one outdoor. The outdoor one you have to pay for sunbeds (approx £3) and parasols (approx £1.75) its a good size pool and doesn't get over crowded. There's no childrens pool so if you have children this may not be suitable, l think young children may also have a problem in the sea as there is no going in gradually through shallow bits. There are concrete steps going into the sea and its possibly too deep for young children. The hotel is about a 5 /10 minute walk into the main drag.where there are plenty of shops and restaurants. We printed off some Croatian words before we went which proved quite useful as not all places had English translations for menu's. A & D at the back of the swimming pool did good food.and the staff were very good at 'educating' us with our pronounciation of the Croation words. They did also speak some English which helped. if you had a sandwich there, they were either like doorsteps, or you got a huge bap type roll but both were really fresh and crammed full of your chosen filling..Food is cheaper & drink is probably about the same as in England. Breakfast is the hotel was plentiful & fresh but it was the same everyday, much the same in the evening. Although there was something for everyone (Vegetarians would probably live on fish or salad) you knew what was going to be there. Saying that, it wasn't the worst food that i've ever tasted, alot of it was really nice. Be warned, if you go after 8.30pm the food is usually cold! I would definitely recommend the Admiral hotel, I think we had dealings with all the reception staff and found them all to be helpful and friendly, if we had a question or a problem, they were very good.at helping us. We also found the bar & restaurant staff & even the cleaners very friendly as well although their English was extremely limited. There were very few English people in Opatiya in fact we didn't hear anyone other than the few English in our hotel. It is mainly Germans & Italians so if you are looking for an English place in Croatia, this probably isn't for you. There isn't a Macdonalds, Costa Coffee or English pub in Opatiya, its just a very scenic friendly, relaxing place to be..

“This hotel is a museum”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 August 2010

It is a very old hotel, government owned hotel! "Vergane glorie" in Dutch.
The staff was not friendly at all. The rooms & all facilities like restaurant, spa facilities are just old & staff is as old as the hotel, I think.
The rooms are very cheap decorated!
Breakfast is a mess! My boyfriend did not fitt under the shower... He was too tall but he is not extravagant tall! 1m85 à 1m90?
hotel Admiral does have a great location on the "promenade"
We changed hotels the 2nd day --> to hotel Ambassor.
That was not a big improvement. This hotel was also from the same chain / owner.
Never again!
My suggestion for Opatija would definately be the Mileneij hotel chain!!!

“Great vacation”

Very nice otel, excellent location, superb view from the rooms, very nice and helpful staff especially the animators who gave us a guided walk trough the city.
The only negative issue was the lack of free internet.

“Worst service ever award”

Service people at the desk had an attitude, in fact they were almost hostile. Room was pretty old, and folded bed was uncomfortable, and we were not told before hand that we will have to use one for the 3rd person. The TV antenna was in bad shape as well and we needed to play around with it all night to get a half decent picture. Still can't believe this is 4 stars, we have been in hotels that cost less than half during the trip that were way way better in every respect. Go at your own risk.

“A good place to be for the small amount of time that you are not exploring”

In a town of elegantly decaying Austrian mansions, this hotel is somewhat an anachronism, but it does its job Admirably. Ah hem. The room was clean and spacious and fully air-conditioned (once I worked out that it only stayed on as long as the balcony door was shut). It's location is perfect; a short jaunt into town and right on the promenade which links a number of little towns/villages and is well worth the walk. The hotel mainly catered for Germans, Italians and Eastern Europeans, mainly over 45, so being English and pre-geriatric we did feel somewhat in the minority, but as we are not hardened party animals, this was not an issue.

Both pools were fine, but with miles of stunning coast, we really didn't need them...within 15 mins walk you could find yourself an all-but secluded cove (even in a summer month) to swim and get burnt, should you so wish. The beaches are all pebbles with a peppering of sea urchins, so I would recommend bringing sea-shoes, or buying them there. So, yes, don't go to this part of Croatia at all if you want sandy beaches.

Breakfast was good; as varied as you will find anywhere. We were B&B only so didn’t experience dinner in the restaurant, but we did dine one night in the Taverna (connected to the hotel) and the food was fine and reasonably priced. Restaurants in the town vary greatly. Vongola, along the prom towards the town centre, had a good menu and the Chardonnay from Krk was divine. Eating right on the seafront was lovely too. Fish does feature heavily in all eateries in this area, as does lots of red meat. Vegetarians are somewhat of an anathema to Croatia, so if you are one (or a fussy eater) you'll probably end up resorting to pizza a lot of the time.

You can explore the area from Opatija and there are tour operators which will offer day trips inland, or to Venice (if you can brave the boat ride). We didn't hire a car, but this is probably the best way to explore the area and I would most certainly recommend this. There is a car-hire place in one of the shops attached to the front of the hotel.

The one down-side to the whole experience for us was the staff who can be variable to say the least. Whereas some were incredibly helpful and friendly (like the majority of people working in cafés and restaurants), asking for an extra towel from one man on reception was like asking for his credit card and PIN. There is loads to see and do in the area, so we spent hardly any time in the hotel and, therefore, it suited our needs well. If you want US style "three bags full, sir" service, this place probably isn't your bag.
