“"Hidden extras"”

When I asked some details about the historical background of the H. Kvarner, the receptionist said: "we do not have any!". Few minutes later he 'remembered'... "maybe I could help!". Then he printed me some 10-15 A4 pages about the hotel's history and said: "And....? what are we going to do now?" Then he asked for 50 Kuna (app 7.0 EUR)...
He probably felt great after that, but I'll always remember Kvarner as a place where I'll have to ask 'how much' even for the info.

“Why so many bad reviews? Was a perfect choice for us!”

I brought a group of 30 students to Opatija for the weekend and we arranged with a tour company to stay at Hotel Kvarner. I must say, the other reviews on here are a bit harsh! Maybe it's because I went in expecting the worst, but I found the Hotel Kvarner to be charming and beautiful. Sure, the decor is a bit outdated and old, but the location and view of the sea makes up for that. As someone else said, if you're used to top-quality hotels, I suppose I can see why you were disappointed, but it's the oldest Croatian hotel on the Adriatic. I found it perfectly suitable for our group and it exceeded all my expectations. The staff was helpful, the breakfast buffet had a large selection and there was something for everyone, and the rooms were clean.

“Historic Grandeur just too faded”

The sign at the driveway says it all having four stars with one painted out. This hotel is living on its historic past and is just not up to 2009 standards. The rooms have peeling wallpaper, broken fittings, dodgy electrics and "antique" furniture of the sort our family threw out 50 years ago. Coupled with average food and some rude staff, this old lady of opulence just does not do it any longer. An exhibition in the town showed the Hotel in 1953 - and NOTHING has changed - same bathrooms, carpet, wallpaper, furniture. Needs some serious money spending on it to bring it back to even reasonable standards.

“The worst hotel I ever stayed at”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 August 2009

Every year I stay in at least 5 hotels all over the world and I must say this was a desaster. They welcomed us with "You are staying at this hotel?!" I was so shocked by this gesture that I couldn't say anything. I don't know why they asked us that - were we too young to visit that hotel (22 years)? ...
Second... we reserved a double room they put us in single with french bed - but it was obvious that was a single - even receptionist said so, and we couldn't get another room because all of them were occupied - but we made a resevation for double and they wanted us to pay per double....
Food was terrible, we got to dinner at 19.10 and food was already cold. Breakfast was poor - bread was old, coffe was terrible...
One morning we passed fire escapes - they were full of old furniture so in case od fire we wouldn't get out safe.
Room was poor (single for 2 persons) we didn't have a TV controler and the manual controler on the TV was fiksed so we couldn't use TV (but ok we didn't even want to). Shower was cold, furniture run down...
Swimming pool was not cleaned for ages...
I will certainly not come back to this hotel.

“Stay away from 19th century Hungarian style hotels, especially in Croatia”

Thousands of people have stayed throughout it's past and oh can you smell it when walking down the enormous delapidated corridors to your tiny, stuffy delapidated room. Shabby is too generous a word when describing the treat that was waiting for you after a long drive down the autobahn. Within an hour of arriving the decision was made to cancel our 2 day stay and find another hotel ASAP. Still we had to endure a night in this rot box and despite stuffing sleeping bags over the hundred year old matresses (I dread to think how many creepy crawlies lived in them) they were still the most uncomfortable since our horrendeous stay at the even worse Hotel Riviera in Pula (a hotel of the same species).

The outdoor swimming pool was filthy with a layer dead skin and suncream heavily accumilated above the water line as well as the concoction of overly heavy chemicals and saltwater, the kids were pulled out within 5 minutes complaining of stinging eyes and skin.

A hasty 6am departure meant breakfast was thankfully missed.
