If you think hotels should be bland and shiny, the Kvarner is not for you. If you want a taste of the grandeur of a bygone age, here it is. The hotel is in need of refurbishment, which only adds to its charm. We had a good third floor room with two balconies overlooking the sea, a well equipped bathroom, plush monogrammed carpets and whiter than white sheets and towels. The bed was very squeaky, but that was more our neighbours' problem! The staff are wonderful, true professionals, full of old fashioned courtesy that you don't find much nowadays. Food was great, a wide choice of dishes, although it wouldn't suit fussy Brits in search of "full English" and steak and chips, far too cosmopolitan. The gardens are cool and shady, the pool is a nice size (definitely not dirty) and there are plenty of sunbeds to go round (we were never charged). Perhaps the sunbeds are vacated between 11.30 and 1 because people go for lunch? Guests were very friendly, everyone stops and chats even if you don't speak the same language. The seafront location is perfect for swimming, strolling along the Lungo Mare and convenient for the town.
