I have been vacationing in Atlantic City for 15 years. My wife and I go three times a year for a week, and a few weekends here and there. (The last time was in january for a weekend.) I've stayed at almost all the resorts in AC. For the last 7 or 8 years, this is the only hotel I stay at. In my opinion, it is the best.
You can debate about which casino has the so-called 'loosest' slots, or which hotel has the best comps... There are 11 resort/casinos (12 when Revel opens in the spring.) Gamble at them all if you want. I do.
I also dine at all the Hotels at AC. They all have fine restaurants. My personal favorite is Cubra Libre at Tropicana. Also, all the hotels have great bars and clubs. When i go to AC, I like to go from casino to casino. I drink, gamble, eat, and party in all of them (Except Bally's which I think has gone WAY downhill.)
But when i stay overnight I stay at Borgata. I only stay at Borgata for several reasons:
(1) It is by far the most elegant hotel in AC. Hands down. It makes most of the other hotels look shabby by comparison. (Revel may raise the bar when it opens in May.)
(2) The level of customer service is unsurpassed. I have never encountered any rudeness from any staff member (except at the Starbucks, but Borgata doesn't operate that - and it is a Starbucks!!)
(3) The rooms are beautiful. I've never had a room that wasn't in excellent condition.... never had a noisy neighbor problem... never had any maintenance issues.
(4) I like the fact that the hotel portion is totally seperate from the casino area. Private elevators that only hotels guests can use. Other hotels have elevators that serve all areas of the resort including the rooms.
(5) it's away from the Boardwalk. I like strolling the Boardwalk when I'm in AC, and hanging out on the beach, but somethimes it doesn't feel safe. Borgata lacks random homeless people and crazed townies roaming through the casino.
(6) The pool and spa area are the best. Beautiful indoor pool and spa area. My wife and I like to hot tub together and some of the other resorts have seperate areas for men and women. (Bally's used to have a nice spa area, but it's gone downhill, like the rest of the place.)
There are some downsides. My wife likes to shop at the Walk and at the Pier. When we stayed at Caesars, Bally's or Trump, she could just walk. To go anywhere else in AC from Borgata requires a drive or cab or jitney. I used to like staying at those other hotels because we could walk to different places.
When you stay at Borgata, you really are in the middle of nowhere. So if you want to be in walking distance to alot of other stuff, stay somewhere else.
Also, yes, it's a little more expensive. But, it's not that much more expensive. and well worth it. I always hear this; "Why should I spend a lot for a room?? I'm never in the room... i just sleep there..." Well, if you sleep there, thats 25-30% of your day right there - spent in the room. Also, I dont leave the room as soon as i get up and I don't go to bed as soon as I go in for the night. Plus showering and changing clothes, and simply just relaxing. Think about how much time you really spend in the room. 10 hours a day? 12? Half your trip??
If you're only staying one night, then by all means go for something cheap and perfectly acceptable. If youre going to be there for more than a few days, spend the extra money and stay somewhere special.
This is just my opinion. Feel free to disagree.
