“Do not go here”

we travel a lot and please know we are not pompous at all and far frm so please listen to me as we stay in all sorts of hotels big or small nor have i ever written a review like this before. we own restaurants and know you can't please everyone but this place is not the place to go to. i don't know where some of these reviews came frm saying it's a good place really i have no idea but this property is not where you would want to go for a vacation don't do it or you will be sorry. beds have no box springs and are hard as a rock and i can sleep on mostly anything as we camp also, broken furniture in our water ft room (which is supposed to be their nicest) replaced with unfinished plywood for a shelf, our room smelt of mold and had to keep the patio door open the whole time it was so bad really i'm not kidding, the mirror had 15 or so black spots in it, blk mold in the bathrooms floors and little white grout left without mold, shower had the same mold, no hot water turned on in the bathroom sink when you turned on the valve no water came out ! , hot water on and off for a day, ceiling had large crack going across it not fill in, light blubs were out on 2 of the lights in the room which did not get replaced, hallway out side our room had 3 at least 18" round spots the were repaired and not painted, water stained ceilings too and cracks, lobby hardly clean and entrance windows dirty the whole time we were there- we found the same coffee spills on the same coffee table in the lobby for 2 of the 4 days were stayed there which got to be a joke with us, badly stained seating in the lobby on the orange sofa and chairs besides the weave on the rattan furniture were broken or coming off most of them, we watched the guy half hardily clean the floor (seems by looking at all working there they hate there job). reception could give a hoot for simple requests and are far frm accommodating or nice. food was ok for a buffet and restaurant mgr and main server was very nice and seemed embarrassed on how the hotel looked when we spoke to him about it (the only one who seemed to care) pool area real is really shabby and full of mold around bar and have shabby lounge chairs besides half broken. all in all if you all can take heed this is not the place to go there are better place connected to this place we went there to ck them out and eat every night not in our hotel, this place would not transfer us to their sister hotels either even though we would have paid more, where they repainted through out the hotel mostly the lobby they didn't tape anything off and painted on to moldings like they were blind and only did one coat so the other color under it you could still see, when they painted the lobby ceiling they dripped large white paint on the wall mural above the reception desk and tainted that too you can see they just don't care- really the list goes on - the beaches and islands were real nice we must say and had a good time out of the hotel as we did not want to spend any time there as you would think. do not go here you will be sorry !!!

“Exceeded poor expectation”

We were aware that going to San Andres meant that we were there for the beautiful waters and snorkeling, and that the resorts were not up to par. I've backpacked before and stayed in hostels, and this is pretty much what this place is. Hot running water is scarce, the sheets are stained, and the air conditioning is not reliable. What we found to be the worst part of the stay was the food. Since it was an all inclusive package, we felt compelled to at least try the food. However, the only meal that was edible was breakfast (order your own omelettes). All the other meals, the meats were overcooked, the breads/staches stale and the vegetables in the salad bar were old.

It may sound that I'm expecting a lot from this hotel, and that may be true. I understand its geared towards Colombian high school/college students looking for a fun spring break atmosphere. However, the other problem with this hotel compared to the other Decamerons on the island is that the activities are terrible. The pool is tiny, the beach rocky and dangerous and they have no other amenities. We found ourselves spending most of our time at the other Decamerons because of the vast amount of things the other offered (tanning decks, water polo, big pools, nice beach property).

All in all, it wasn't a very pleasant stay, and I would not recommend this hotel to any travelers expecting a standard hotel. Consider this hotel an all inclusive-hostel experience.

Room Tip: You can ask for ocean view rooms, but they are very limited.

“Decameron is the only way to go IMO...and if this hotel is the cheapest, stay here!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 April 2011

First off, San Andres is amazing. Go there and experience a little of Colombia and the best beaches, water you've ever seen.
I traveled with my 62 yr old mother here and we had a great time. The Maryland was the perfect size hotel for us and our room was great with a view of the ocean. Pros and Cons below:

Pros (+)
-one of the smallest Decamerons...less people, less kids, higher staff to guest ratio, less crowded in general.
-Really quiet at night....could only hear the ocean. no loud bars around or parties.
-Decent buffet food (we only ate breakfast there, one lunch and two dinners)
-If you want a quiet hotel, but still want to close to the main beach, downtown, the Maryland is the best option
-it was our cheapest option. VALUE!!!
-AC worked great!

Cons (-)
-Food is always buffet so I recommend lunch reservations outside and ALWAYS dinner reservations outside (San Luis and Delfines had the best A LA CART seafood restaurants...we had some really amazing meals!)
-about 5 airplanes take off a day and Maryland is right by airport....but its ok because it's better to enjoy the rest of the island and not at your hotel (if you like staying in the hotel the whole time maybe Maryland isnt for you.)
-Rooms are a little old looking and need to be updated
-Hot water was not too great...but hey, WELCOM TO COLOMBIA!

All in all, Decameron is the way to go and if you're looking for a quiet, cheap place to stay that's well located (san luis and marazul are too far away from the action for my liking), the Maryland is your spot. Take taxis or bus and enjoy the island every day. two pro tips:

-Rocky Cay is the best beach to spend all day. Decameron owns the bar & restaurant by there so eat, drink, lounge free.... rent snorkel masks and walk out to the tiny island in waist deep CRYSTAL CLEAR water...if you have the balls, swim out to the shipwreck on the reef, climb the rope ladder and jump off the top deck of the rusty cargo boat. my favorite experience there.
-Rent a scooter for the day from extreme rentals near Decameron Aquarium (us $30) and explore the whole island...go visit the blowhole at the south end and stop at any deserted beach, rocky point for a Jack Handy moment. Amazing.

Room Tip: get there a little before 3pm and request a view

“San Andres Maryland: Great Food, cheap rooms, staff is 50/50...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 April 2011

The Decameron Maryland hotel is very small and that is what we were looking for... Tranquility was our vacation theme this year... lets put it that way, that trip cost us 3000$ for both my wife and I, including airfare, taxes etc.for 1 week. So For a cheap all inclusive, it ok... we've traveled a bit in the south, about 15 times, Cuba, Mexico, Dominican republic etc etc.. as far as quality of the room, bed etc, its the worst place we've ever been too... Watter dripping from our room's ceiling was just one little thing... no hot water is a regular thing in the south so why bother... still, we've had fun, we wanted to Snorkel and it was a great place for it... Food was AMAZING... Period. 100000x times better than ANY Cuban resort we've been to (went to Cuba about 7-8 times), usually Melias... Really, it was unexpected and greatly appreciated. Only a buffet at the hotel but since you can go to all the other decameron, we could have gone out every night for a la carte restaurants.. we did it once, at the Steak house (Marazul hotel), and it was the worst meal ever.. just to sum it up a bit, when you go to maryland, FOOD is a big 110%... Rooms are BAD... Staff is 50/50... (Front desk employees were everything except helpful... felt like we were disturbing 'em more than anything... I have a business and needed an internet connection, it was not working and when we've asked them when we could possibly use it, they turned around without answering the basic question...) still, when we're on vacation, we don't really let things like that get to us... we know better. We were at a walking distance from the town's center and we found everything we needed over there (don't expect a smile anywhere and you won't be disappointed by the rudeness of some local peddlers...) and everything is super cheap. Go by Taxi, it cost $2... over crowded mini buses are $1... All in all, yeah, we will most definitely go back to this island for the snorkeling facilities (West cove is amazing), don't expect any luxurious resorts, avoid San Luis (its a party place full of loud drunken idiots of all ages) if you're looking for a calm place to stay...

“Gets really good when you spend the day in other hotels of the chain..”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 March 2011

My expectations were very high because of the words "All included Resort", so, I got disappointed about Maryland.Thats the simplest Decameron hotel of the island. In my case, there were no available rooms in the other Decamerons, so, I went to Maryland and spent the days and nights in the other hotels. Let me list some of the bad things that I was not expecting:
I was expecting a bigger bad (I am tall); the water in the shower and sink is salty and temperature very instable; the cable TV signal had problems all days = 10 to 20 minutes out(the front desk knew it and mentioned reception problem in the hotel); the water in the hotel was cut in my last day from 10am to 12am, so I could not go to the beach that day because I could not take the airplane without a shower); the furniture had bad small and was old; my room was not cleaned one day (the hang tab of the hotel says "clean the room" in one side and "dont bother" in the other side). I put "clean the room" and they didnt notice it.
Wireless internet only in the lobby area (around USD4 per hour); the minibar inside the room was empty all the time (not even a bottle of water); the bathroom is small; the hotel didnt have money to exchange (USD 50) when I needed; the private beach of Maryland is tiny (not fun); they have a window at the beach to serve quick food (so smalls, it is difficult to mount your sanduiche), my french fries were gone in the first wind.
The restaurant is good. They have waiters serving the drinks but you help yourself with food. The only hotel of the chain without "a la carte" dinner.
The "downtown" area is 15 minutes walk away. You can pay around USD 3 for a taxi.
Taxi from the airport to Maryland is 10 to 11.000 pesos (around USD 7). I didnt have problems with taxi, even though there are no taximeters.
There are also good points:
Many choices of very good natural juices. The staff was friendly. The pool area is small but I liked it.
In MarAzul there is a boat taking you to a private island. Since I was in Maryland I could not take it.
For all these reasons, I recommend the other Decameron hotels where the structure is much better (I had the opportunity to visit them all).
