My girlfriend and I have travelled to all inclusive resorts in Cuba, Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Mexico, all 4-5 stars resorts and now San Andres! This time for 2 weeks (January 16 to 30) and mainly to scuba dive.
The scuba diving was excellent, lots of variety of fish, saw some sharks, big eels... We dove with Sharky’s, they would pick us up at the resort in the morning around 8:50am for our double dives and bring us back at the resort around 13:00pm. Haynor was our divemaster and he was very knowledgeable. O yes, the tanks and our dive gears were in the boats waiting for us so the service was very good. After negotiating with a few dive shops (Karibik, hotel dive shop...), they had the best prices. I would recommend Sharky’s without any hesitation.
Now for the hotel. The rooms are clean (although dated), nothing fancy, the mattress is firm. The buffet was small and really didn't have much variety from meal to meal. The food wasn't bad, but also nothing to write home about. The service was slow most of the time. We tried 3 a la carte restaurants, the steak house, International and The Thai at the Aquarium, the steaks weren’t cooked... So we gave up and stick to the buffet afterwards. Bear in mind that I’m not a fussy eater at all. The drinks weren’t bad but the alcohol was the typical no name crap bottles that you could buy in town for $4, don’t expect Smirnoff, Bacardi..., go to the Aquarium for that. The service at the bar on the pier was good, thanks to Marly. The beach, if you can call that a beach! is small, not your typical Caribbean beach and the beach chairs had no cushion, so not comfortable at all. As for the Rocky Cay beach (Decameron’s beach), I found it small and dirty, it was fun to walk on the other side to the island. In my opinion, the only nice beach is the public beach in town. At night, be prepared to get bitten by mosquitoes if you are near the lobby or pool.
We did go visit the other Decameron hotel and liked the Aquarium the most, the snorkeling is excellent there. We also rented a golf cart for a day which was fun, we went in town shopping a few times, ate in town at a few places, the meals were very good.
Overall, I enjoyed my vacation but don’t go there expecting the same quality/service that you would be receiving in the Dominican Republic/Mexico (Mayan Riviera). I probably wouldn’t return but would recommend to friends for the scuba diving.
