“Over-priced, awful food, surly staff. Don't stay here”

Providencia is a beautiful, laid-back island with fantastic food, friendly people and brilliant snorkeling. Hotel Sol Caribe was a real disappointment and seriously needs improvement, as it lets down the image of this otherwise lovely island. The hotel claims to back green measures, and be eco friendly but had piles of rubbish left right on the rocky beach. We actually ended up clearing away stray coke cans that had been left to rot there, as we couldn't stand seeing them spoiling an otherwise pretty setting.

The breakfast consists of nasty tinned fruit (why, when you can eat fresh tropical fruit and consume amazing jugos elsewhere on the island?). We actually couldn't stomach such depressingly grim breakfast, so went to the fabulous Art cafe up the road on our remaining days.

The rooms are so overpriced even for a Londoner - and they charge extra for petty things like the security box per night.

The staff were surly and unfriendly - a real let down when everyone else we met on the island were so kind and friendly.

On one good note they arrange good value boat trips, but I really wouldn't stay here - there are many better options - we moved and happily settled into Hotel Sirius after. A million times better food, room, helpful staff and much cheaper.

“Nice-looking but lacking”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 January 2010

Sol Caribe is well located and has access to a nice beach; the layout is very appealing; employees are friendly.

On the lacking side: the smell from the drainage ditch is really a turn off. Hot water never arrives. The making of a room seems to be limited to making the beds and changing the towels. Maintenance seems to be lax (door knob in bathroom broke who knows when but was not replaced; closet door hanging on one side only, etc.). Rather small rooms with inefficient air conditioning. If you have physical disabilities this is not the place for you (this may extend to the archipelago).

A word of caution: never buy an "all-included" package because it does not apply, or it does not mean the same as what it means in the same chain in San Andres. Don't know if this is a specific problem with Sol Caribe but it is better to make other arrangements.

“Lovely!”

Very cozy hotel with great location. We got a room just above the reception facing the pool, it was a bit noisy mostly because of a bunch of loud fifteen year old girls who were staying at the hotel as part of a schooltrip, but other than that everything was fine. Air conditioning worked and hot water was scarce but enough. Service was warm and friendly. The food was OK though there are much better places to eat on the island, for instance El Divino Niño, Caribbean Place (aka Donde Martin) or Cafe Studio.

We would defenetely recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Providencia. We found other reviews on this site to be a bit misleading, it's not a luxurious hotel (none of the other hotels in Providencia are) but it's clean, friendly and really worth your money.

“Mixed feelings”

The Hotel is in a beautiful location, and has a good diving store very close. Infrastructure is acceptable, it has a pool, buildings have typical island architecture. My room was clean, but had NO view , some friends rooms were smelly. Food is horrible, and they do not serve fresh fish or shrimps or similar, which you expect being in an island. People are friendly. There is no sand beach in front of the hotel, but you can walk to a nice beach very close to the hotel.

Recomend going for lunch to "Playa Suroeste", delicious fresh fried fish, which you never get at Sol Caribe Hotel.

“There is better hotels on the island !”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 October 2008

As a group we booked this hotel a couple of months in advance, so we could have our rooms all next to each other. When we got there, there were several problems. Our rooms were spread all over the hotel area and none of us were right next to each other as promissed. The one thing that really bothered us and made us change hotels after 2 days, was that there is a small river right next to the hotel. We suspect that they let the water from the toilets right down there, because every time you walk along that little river, it stinks like hell. Some of our rooms were right along that river and we certainly didnt appreciate that.

Other than that the hotel is ok. I have to say though, the island is such a precious place, it's a shame to spend it in a hotel that is only trying to be a smaller Decameron version of his bigger brothers and sisters in San Andres. After 2 days we went to stay at Sirius Hotel, which is located in South West beach. The hotel is way smaller, the people are super nice and the beach is easily 10 times bigger as the one that Sol Caribe has. The rooms are even bigger and and if you compare prices, you are way better of at Sirius Hotel. So I definitely recommend to stay at a smaller hotel on this beautiful little island. Its way more private and you get the better treatment.

  • Liked — nothing comes to mind
  • Disliked — You can smell the sanitary wastewater all over the hotel and it stinks like hell if you have your room close to the small river on the right side.
