“A hotel CAN be both big and good”

My wife and I stayed at the Jin Jiang Hotel two separate times in September, 2007. This is a VERY large, modern and well kept hotel complex in central Chengdu; a city that turned out to be one of our favorite in China (and yes, there are giant pandas nearby). There are two separate large buildings. Both seem to have similar rooms, but the annex requires a walk of a couple hundred meters to reach the dining room in the main building. That large, but very inviting restaurant served an excellent breakfast, but we did not try if for lunch or dinner. The lobby and shopping area of the main building were very spiffy, with polished marble and mirrors everywhere. The annex was just fine, but not nearly as glamorous.

Both of our rooms were a lot better than average for non-tourist center China – very clean, comfortable and quiet. I especially liked the free high-speed Internet connection in the rooms. The hotel seemed to attract both upper-end tour groups and rich Chinese (many Ferraris, Lamborghinis and fancy BMWs in the parking lot). I think in general you are better off in the main building, but don’t expect great views anywhere (unless you are turned on by busy streets). There may be better hotels in Chengdu, but this one is a pretty safe bet that we were happy with.

  • Liked — It was just a nice place to stay that met our needs. Very good breakfast.
  • Disliked — Not much excitement to it.

“Nice accomodation”

We stayed here for one night on the way up to Woolong. No surprise here, the room was very nice and up to standard. Service at the bar, restaurants (buffet breakfast) and front desk were very good and English skills of the staff were excellent. No one should be surprised as Jin Jiang is the largest and one of the older hotel operators on the mainland. They typically have the better properties in each of the cities.

Customers are a fairly even mix of nationals and Westerners. The hotel does a good job of catering to the needs of both.

Many tour operators use this hotel so at times, the lobby is a bit of a zoo but they're efficient with these groups so it's really not an issue. Further, it does not impair their service levels to other customers.

If you drink wine, particularly white, exercise caution here. All the whites, at least at the bar, are Chinese and not of the better vineyards so drink the grape at your own risk.

  • Liked — Check in and check out were efficient
  • Disliked — white wine selection was not good

“Awesome!!!!”

I stayed at this hotel on business for over 1 month and I was in the executive suit. By far this is the best room I have ever stayed in for the price of a 3 star hotel in the states. The staff was nice and there were several western staff including a young professional man who was in charge of all the sales in the region. We talked for hours about Chengdu and it's history. The western buffet although was not up to my standars. I hope the staff in this hotel would be paid more than a few hundred dollars a month. other than that I loved it!

Stayed one night in this hotel.
The room was very clean, not large.
All amenities were available and functional.
The pink bedslippers were interesting.
Many buttons and switches in this apparently very wired room. Kind of over the top compared to other set-ups.

The breakfast hall is impressive and was nice during the dark morning.
Service is quick

“Five Star Hotel, Two Star Bathroom”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 July 2006

My wife and I stayed here for two nights in June, 2006. It is definitely a five star hotel, but don’t judge it from the exterior, which is rather plain and unremarkable. Inside, though, the huge lobby area immediately sets the tone with beautiful marble and soaring ceilings. The hotel is a full service establishment, complete with spa, pool, exercise room, a huge atrium restaurant, several bars, and a number of private dining rooms set up for high-end business travelers.
Our room was large and nicely furnished with desk (high-speed internet access), settee, twin beds with a night stand between them. The ac was quiet and effective.
The bathroom was adequate-sized with lots of counter space. Fitting with the five-star level, the amenities were as extensive as anyone could wish for – including detergent, nail clippers and razor kits, among many other items. The bathroom and the room itself did have some maintenance issues, though – moldy grout along the bathroom counter, peeling varnish on the front of the vanity, warn carpeting in the sleeping area. The most irritating issue, though was that the shower tub drained so slowly that we were mid-calf deep by the end of a shower. Two attempts to get this fixed failed. Although it might be something you would put up with in other hotels, you shouldn’t have to in a five-star establishment.
The location of the hotel was difficult to assess during our short stay. We were close to the Brocade River and within easy walking distance to the flower and pet markets.
Overall we’d say the Jin Jiang is a comfortable hotel, short on charm and character but long on amenities.
