“Devilish Details”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 September 2010

The Holiday Inn Youlian Suzhou is located just outside the old city walls- or should I say moat. It is still quite a long walk to any of the sights of Suzhou, which are quite spread out anyway.

It is next door to a large supermarket, wihch may be helpful for self-caterers. Like much of Eastern China, the Holiday Inn is shiny and new. However, to an extent, the devil is in the detail. The level of English of the staff is not up to international standards and confusion and misunderstandings were common from check-in to check-out. The worst example was an extremely confusing episode about the shoe-shine service. Despite being prominently advertised, no one had heard of the service and instead thought we wanted ice, an iron and a new pair of sandals!

The executive lounge was average but not exceptional. The only 'cocktails' available were red wine or beer, though the spicy kebabs were tasty. Our room itself was smart and stylish and included free internet, though the view was more Eastern Bloc housing-estate than Suzhou classic garden.

“Good option for the price you pay, but there's not much of a character here”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 August 2010

I did not choose to stay here; I was arranged to speak at a meeting held here by a Chinese company. That said, I feel that this hotel served its purpose well, although there was no "wow" factor.
First off, the room was large enough and for the rates they charged (about RMB 500 per night, I asked but did not pay for it) that was adequate. The amenities were modern and cleanliness was there. There was a separate shower and it was a nice surprise given that it's rated four stars. The lobby was also nicely appointed and the look and feel of this hotel does look good.
That said, there were some inadequacies and signs that showed this is after all a Chinese hotel run by a budget-option hotel chain. The breakfast options were just so-so and the Chinese breakfast option on the 2nd floor (I tried both the Western and Chinese options for different days) was worse. Variety was lacking, and service was lukewarm.
The corridor on the 10th floor where I stayed also had a weird smell, reeking of stale fish or vegetables. The air was definitely musty and the carpets weren't well maintained (I don't know how long this hotel has been in business). Housekeeping was also inconsistent -- the room's carpets were not vacuumed properly even though it was obvious I had spilt some nuts on it the night before (maybe because I would leave after just two nights) and the cotton buds were not replaced despite being used already.
But let's not try to be too harsh here. For the price you pay, this is a good option with a credible location. There is a huge supermarket next to the hotel, and some budget eating options within walking distance. Although it's some distance from the centre of Suzhou old town, a short taxi ride lasting no more than 10 mins would take you to the main shopping street of this ancient city. Yet I don't think I will stay at this hotel the next time; it simply lacks character. Of course I never really like the Holiday Inn brand, so maybe I am not 100% objective here.

“Great Hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 April 2010

We stayed here with our Chamber of Commerce. Rooms were very nice, staff friendly, and breakfast buffet was great. The adjoining neighborhood looked a little rough, but that seemed average for most places in China that we stayed at. It's not a 5-star hotel, but still very nice. Free internet was a plus, although some American websites like Facebook and Twitter were blocked by the Chinese government.

“Still here - Still happy!”

Sitting in my room at the Holiday Inn Youlian Suzhou as I type this review and I am very comfortable and satisfied. We've been here 2 nights, have 2 more to go and will be sorry to leave. The staff is very friendly, attentive and helpful - most speak English pretty well. Both the cafe' and the restaurant are very good - though the restaurant is a little pricey by Chinese standards. The rooms are fabulous and the beds the most comfortable I have experienced in China so far. The location is very close - 20 minutes or less easy walk - to the Pan Men Scenic Area (last remaining section and gate of the old city wall) and we haven't paid more than 20 RMB for a taxi to any of the major sites we've visited so the location hasn't been a issue. A big plus is the huge supermarket just up the street.

“a lot of character...”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 November 2008

My wife and I were part of sightseeing tour in China. We stayed in Suzhou for one night. The room was very modern with great decor. Ours was a standard room with a king bed and it was pretty good sized. We've stayed in slightly larger rooms, but have also stay in much smaller rooms as well. The bed was comfortable and the room very neat and clean. The bathroom had a nice shower and separate tub, which my wife enjoyed after sightseeing all day. I can't speak for its proximity to anything since we were part of a tour group and I didn't pay much attention to that, although we did venture to a nearby shopping center, which was definitely for locals, but still fun.

  • Liked — The hotel and the room were very modern looking and very accommodating
  • Disliked — Didn't seem to be near anything for non-locals
