I recently spent the May Day holiday weekend with my girlfriend at this hotel in Fuzhou. It is very clean and the rooms are very nice, but the hotel fancies itself a four star hotel. In reality, I would rate it about a two and a half star hotel. The rooms are at least a three, but the food, if you like Western food, is no better than a two. The worst McDonald's in China has cheese and potatoes available for breakfast, yet this hotel had neither for their supposed Western breakfast that they charge 50 Y for (the equivalent of seven US dollars). Also the chefs will only cook you one egg at a time! There are parsimonious amounts of coffee, fruits and sweet pies or cakes. The hot cuisine is almost exclusively Chinese, but advertised as Western. When was the last time a Westerner ordered rice for breakfast instead of potatoes? The service was not that great, as I had to refill my tiny little cup of coffee three times before I got an American portion. Also the waitresses just stand around and just do silly things with items on your table rather than actually do something useful like refill your coffee for you as any waitress would in the US. The quality of the breakfast meats was suspect, at best. They served prison bacon and the sausage was Chinese and not something most Westerners would care for. It is mostly cereal and fat with a little bit of meat. There was no ham, pancakes, french toast or other breakfast items normally associated with a Western breakfast buffet. The orange juice was fresh, as was the coffee, but it was all downhill from there with the food. If rooms are important to you, add a half star, but if breakfast is important to you, be sure to subtract a half star - rating: 2 and a half stars

Stayed in winter, and the heater in the room was on unlike what I hear in some other hotels in Fujian where they turn on the heater only when the temperature drops to 10 degrees and below.
Room was clean and reasonably sized with a free PC with internet connection for use.
My mum who normally cannot sleep well when travelling had no problems sleeping on their bed.
International breakfast was not fantastic but my family had no complaints. We were impressed by them using chair covers to cover our bags and jackets to prevent them from being removed easily.

This was my third and maybe last stay here.. This was the first time I stayed in the winter. In case you don't know, south of the Yangtze river, China has no heat in most buildings. So many Chinese hotels have no heat unless they are five star or western branded hotels that are top brands. The Best Western in Fuzhou has heating controls in the rooms. However, when I was there February 22-24 it was not working. I asked the front desk about this and they said it was being repaired and sent up a space heater. The nest morning still produced no heat and I asked to speak to the manager. I spoke to assistant manager Japer Zhang who spoke excellent English. I told him what happened and said I did not believe it was being repaired but was actually turned of as it was in the 50's in Fuzhou. He admitted the hotel turns off the heat when it reaches 10 degrees celsius, or 50 degrees fahrenheit. I told him I didn't like being lied to and that its not that warm at night anyhow. He said there was nothing he could do. I was already on a discounted room I had previously arranged because I booked a total of 6 rooms for a wedding party. He offered an apology but nothing more. I believe I should at least been comped 2 nights for a future stay.

I like this hotel because it's much cheaper than the Shangri La and much better than the local Chinese Hotels for not much more money. If I had only been told the truth, I wouldn't be so upset.
