“Rooms OK, food overpriced”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 November 2008

El Araucano is an old, some would say traditional, hotel in Concepción. The rooms are spacious, clean and have been renovated not long ago, but the building shows its age (particularly in stairs and windows).

Location is good, just next to Concepción's main square. It is only one block to the city's old market, where it is possible to eat very cheaply and buy some souvenirs. The market has plenty of places where to buy fruit, vegetables and bread. The hotel is also close to a pedestrian only shopping area, which includes department stores, restaurants, pharmacies (over ten of them!). The area can be quite noisy at night time, so you may want to avoid it if you are a light sleeper. The main university (Universidad de Concepción) is less than 20 minutes walk from the hotel.

The restaurant is *very* overpriced. I would say that on average one tends to pay 75-100% more than in a normal restaurant. Food is nothing to write home about, but service is good. If you are a vegetarian options are extremely narrow: one salad, gnocchi and that's it.

People are friendly but not very efficient. As an example, I had a problem with the bathtub in my room; the hotel took two days to fix it. Anyway, they were good at booking tours or sorting out taxis for early departure.

“Third time here”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 December 2007

Third visit -- 1983, 2001, 2007. Comfortable rooms, redecorated, good beds. Staff pleasant and bent over backward to be helpful, though my Spanish is better than their English. We did not ever get the wine and fruit the other reviewer did; perhaps we should mention that next time. We were there in a heat wave (80F every day) and very comfortable, so I think they may have air conditioning.

Food is not outstanding, but good relative to other places we tried. The included breakfast is a high point, though they no longer included smoked salmon (seasonal? economy?).

The location is very convenient. We walked to the park at the Cerro Caracol and to the University on earlier trips. There are good craft stores in the mall around the hotel, and a nice coffee place in the mall, just outside the door of the hotel.

“More than excellent, to be highly recommended”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 May 2005

The hotel is situated in the city center. If you arrive by car you will get assistance to drive to the parking in the basement because you have to go through a pedestrian area and the entrance is very steep down. The rooms are small but the bed is oke, the bad room is more spacious. There is no airco, but even in the hot summer months you don’t need one in Concepcion. Never in Chile we found the employees more friendly and assist full than here. And this performance is real and not a trained service, there are even a little shy when you tip them. In the afternoon every room gets a plate with fresh fruit and a small bottle of wine, all free!! But even if you don’t stay in this hotel, you should try the restaurant. Every evening there is another 3-course diner, with choice between 3 entrees and 3 main dishes, the dessert is a buffet. The food is more than excellent and not expensive. This was the best diner we had in Chile!!! Also if you stay, the breakfast is very very good. There may be not as many choice as in the 5-star Mariott in Santiago where we also stayed, but the quality is much better. There is good choice of breakfast items but I will always remember the large bowls of delicious fresh strawberries.
