El Araucano is an old, some would say traditional, hotel in Concepción. The rooms are spacious, clean and have been renovated not long ago, but the building shows its age (particularly in stairs and windows).
Location is good, just next to Concepción's main square. It is only one block to the city's old market, where it is possible to eat very cheaply and buy some souvenirs. The market has plenty of places where to buy fruit, vegetables and bread. The hotel is also close to a pedestrian only shopping area, which includes department stores, restaurants, pharmacies (over ten of them!). The area can be quite noisy at night time, so you may want to avoid it if you are a light sleeper. The main university (Universidad de Concepción) is less than 20 minutes walk from the hotel.
The restaurant is *very* overpriced. I would say that on average one tends to pay 75-100% more than in a normal restaurant. Food is nothing to write home about, but service is good. If you are a vegetarian options are extremely narrow: one salad, gnocchi and that's it.
People are friendly but not very efficient. As an example, I had a problem with the bathtub in my room; the hotel took two days to fix it. Anyway, they were good at booking tours or sorting out taxis for early departure.
