“Good choice if location is important”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 February 2012

Very good location, rooms are fine and spacious. Building is a bit dated but i am not sure what alternatives there are in Concepcion. The restaurant is also ole (traditional maybe). I had no complaints about this hotel when i stayed, as i say it may be one of the best options in Concepcion. To find a little nest of bars & restaurants, turn right out of door, immediately next right and walk straight along the road until you get to "Plaza Espana" about 15 minutes walk or you can usually get a taxi easily outside

“Nice centrally located hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 January 2012

This hotel is right off of the main plaza and very close to shopping and the central market. It is within walking distance (15-20 minutes) from the University. Very good service. Rooms were average. The hotel is nice but showing its age somewhat. Included breakfast was good. Annoying magnetic strip room keys kept getting scrambled every day (even being sure to keep them away from phones etc.).

“Totally adequate”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 January 2012

Decent rooms and beds for an older, large hotel in a smaller city. Staff was basically non-existent during my 3-night stay, but somehow the rooms were kept clean and laundry was prompt. Good location in the centre of town, beside the town square and pedestrian mall, and within walking distance of the uni. Ate at the hotel restaurant one night -- it was fine, although there are better and cheaper options within a short walk. I wasn't impressed by this hotel, but I wasn't disappointed either.

“Rooms OK, food overpriced”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 November 2008

El Araucano is an old, some would say traditional, hotel in Concepción. The rooms are spacious, clean and have been renovated not long ago, but the building shows its age (particularly in stairs and windows).

Location is good, just next to Concepción's main square. It is only one block to the city's old market, where it is possible to eat very cheaply and buy some souvenirs. The market has plenty of places where to buy fruit, vegetables and bread. The hotel is also close to a pedestrian only shopping area, which includes department stores, restaurants, pharmacies (over ten of them!). The area can be quite noisy at night time, so you may want to avoid it if you are a light sleeper. The main university (Universidad de Concepción) is less than 20 minutes walk from the hotel.

The restaurant is *very* overpriced. I would say that on average one tends to pay 75-100% more than in a normal restaurant. Food is nothing to write home about, but service is good. If you are a vegetarian options are extremely narrow: one salad, gnocchi and that's it.

People are friendly but not very efficient. As an example, I had a problem with the bathtub in my room; the hotel took two days to fix it. Anyway, they were good at booking tours or sorting out taxis for early departure.

  • Liked — Easy access to shopping
  • Disliked — Restaurant
