“Great Place, Minor Drawbacks”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 November 2011 via mobile

My husband and I stayed at Buganvillas just for one night. It was a beautiful place with an upscale Mediterranean theme. Overall, the grounds were similar to a very nice US condo complex, but with the amenities of a resort.

We arrived early (check in time is 3pm) so we were given drink vouchers and directed to Oasis Snack Bar, in between two if three pool complexes. It's overpriced, but the food was good. When we finished eating, we were able to check in early. Upon entering our room, we realized that we had been upgraded to a two bedroom suite with a living room, kitchen, and empleada quarters. It was way more than we needed, but it would be a very nice accommodation for a family or group as it was really large.

That afternoon we went exploring and checked out the hotel facilities. We were pretty amazed at the grounds as we did not realize they had all kinds of sport courts, a gym, playground, area for grilling and full size soccer field.

We enjoyed the pools, had excellent messages in the Spa (one of the best I've had), and spent most of the night at the new resort addition, Lure. Lure is a very large restaurant and lounge. It's modern and very well done. There are two inside restaurant buildings (one slightly submerged under water). The rest is outdoor seating which included typical tables, but also cabanas with couches and large round booth tables. The food was excellent and the service was more than attentive. It was pricey by Bolivian standards, but for two full entrees, two rounds of drinks each and a shared dessert it was only $40 US.

Overall, I thought my stay there was very nice, but I did notice small unconvinces that would not fly in the US. My only complaints:
1. The outdoor hottub in the spa was not working (but there is one inside and hotel guests can use that and the saunas for free).
2. The jacuzzi by the third pool complex was drained and not working- you had the use the other jacuzzis.
3. The gym and Oasis bar were not open Monday nights (the only night of our stay).
4. Upon waking up, we could hear the cleaning staff above us moving the metal furniture on the tile floors.

Again, these were very minor so overall, we would recommend this place. I think it would be ideal for families and groups.

“OK but could be better”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 October 2011

We booked a suite with 2 bedrooms particularly with 1 double and twin bedded rooms for my son and daughter. It was paid for weeks in advance but only 2 doubles were available on arrival, 1 of which was a small double bed, totally unsuitable! The air conditioning didn't work in the smaller bedroom but nothing could be done. There was no offer of a price reduction and not even an apology. The bigger room was fine with an en suite bathroom. There was also a kitchen which would be good for a longer stay.I would stay again but would try to ensure that I would get what I paid for!

“Mediocre”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 March 2011

The hotel looks nice from the outside, it's like a gated complex spread out in two-story buildings with condos and suites, reminded me of a time-share place. The hotel claims to be 5-star, but in Bolivia hotels rate themselves and there are no hotels in this poor country that would actually qualify for 5 stars. I would rate this as a 3-star hotel if it was in the USA.
The rooms were aged and smelled of mildew. The air-conditioning in the room only works when you put your key-card in a slot on the wall, so everytime you come back to your room it's stinky, damp, and hot, but at least it saves energy.
Several of the front desk agents spoke decent English, but some didn't.
The food was mediocre and extremely over-priced. I would recommend eating outside of the hotel.
The swimming pools are very nice and clean, with a snack bar and lounge chairs and a jacuzzi; my daughter had fun swimming there.
One day it rained and it was impossible to move around outside without getting soaked, plus brown water started coming out of the taps and shower.
There is a big new conference center, a spa which I didn't try, an ATM machine, and a mini-market, and a business center, and sometimes-accessable WiFi internet in the rooms.
It's a 7-minute taxi-ride to the city's downtown and about half an hour to the airport.

“Weak facade of luxury”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 March 2010

Caveat: I have not stayed in other hotels in Bolivia, and have not stayed in many "luxury" hotels in developing countries, so my review is a biased one from a middle-class American perspective. That said, I have backpacked at hostels, and stayed at luxury Ritz Carltons before, so I do have a range to compare to. I do not know what the rest of Bolivian accommodations are like though.

This hotel is marketed as a luxury resort & spa, and the first impression of the external structures roughly matches that -- maybe a low end resort & spa in the US. The lobby is clean and new, and there are several clean pool areas.

However, the rooms are not very nice. They are designed to be large and spacious like luxury accommodations (we stayed in a 4-room suite), but the details are truly low-rate ... I would say much worse than your average Howard Johnson, or even possibly an American motel 6. The drains in the bathrooms have little bits of dirt on them, and have a slight sewage smell ... but that is the case in most buildings in developing tropical countries. The furniture is screwed into weak plaster walls. The fans are loud, and the vents have dirt/dust on them. The towels are thin and scratchy. The shower upstairs is weak and has a standard cheap shower head. The shower downstairs has a tile floor that has dirt in the grout. The sliding door to the balcony had no lock -- it had broken off, and was not fixed despite several requests over a week. The kitchen is small, old, and musty. The couches are old and scratchy.

Basically, this place is a relatively clean place for a developing country, but do not expect "resort & spa." I was happy staying there because I expected to be staying at low-rate local hotels, and was here to work ... but I would be very unhappy taking a vacation here expecting a resort experience. For a budget trip, it would not be worth the cost to stay here.

The pools were clean, the buffet breakfasts were decent (not great, but not bad ... and the fruit was excellent), and the staff was friendly. There were 3 computers for free internet, and free internet at the lobby and snack bar areas. In-room wifi cost 80 Bolivianos (about US$11) for 3 days.
