“Caye Chapel Resort: Truly a Vacation Paradise”

We visited Caye Chapel Resort as part of our Belize vacation in March 2008. My husband, two sons, (one teen, one tween) and I stayed here for half of our vacation, then went to the Lodge at Chaa Creek (see my separate review) for the remainder of our stay. It was an excellent combination, and gave us a more complete picture of Belize in that we were able to spend time on the water and in the jungle, taking part in beach, historical, and "green" adventure activities. I must concur with the opinion of most other travelers: it was terrific! We got to the island via plane, and were greeted at the landing area by one of the employees who had two golf carts waiting for us. My boys thought it was great that THEY could drive the carts, and spent many happy hours doing just that as part of our stay there. The island had maybe 15-20 other guests there at the time, many of whom were return visitors. The level of service and pampering were extraordinary. We stayed in a more affordable casita (rather than a villa), and it was definitely utilitarian in design and decor, but it was comfortable, very very clean, and met our needs totally. They had asked ahead of time what our boys like to eat, and when we arrived at our air-conditioned casita, the fridge was stocked with bottled water and Fanta soda, with Snickers bars and Pringles potato chips(along with fresh fruit, etc) ready and waiting. It seemed like heaven to them! We opted for the meal plan, so all of our meals and snacks were included in the daily price. We found that to be an excellent value, as there are no other restaurants on the island-- the resort IS the island. We found the food to be superb, and noticed that sometimes other guests asked for items not currently on the menu, but things that they had enjoyed on an earlier visit (I think a certain banana bread french toast was a must-have) I must admit that it took me some time to get used to such a high level of service and freedom, but my husband and sons were comfortable immediately. Because there were so few other guests, we were able to to whatever we wanted when we wanted. My husband and sons were able to golf as much as they liked, starting on whatever hole they liked, and finishing up whenever they chose to. They averaged playing 36 holes each day, and so not having separate greens fees alone paid for a large chunk of the resort cost. The pool was lovely, with a bar for smoothies, drinks, etc. The coconut bowling was fun. The ocean water was warm, smooth, and clear, and just lovely. We swam and kayaked, and my husband and sons fished and then the kitchen prepared their catch for our dinner one night. There was little night life, though after dinner we were able to relax, walk around the island, watch a bit of television, and then get to sleep early to be ready for the next day. We did not encounter any bugs. We added on one extra trip booked through the resort: that was a snorkeling trip to Shark Alley. I cannot say enough how great a trip that was. Belize is noted for its reef, and the conditions were superb. We were on the guided adventure with only one other family, and were able to tailor the trip to what we wanted to do. I was a poor snorkeler, and the guide was excellent in helping me overcome my trepidation, and actually assisting me in the water so that I could enjoy the experience as much as everyone else. It is as a result of that trip that I can now snorkel! The water is so warm, still, and salty that you feel very buoyant in the water and can really focus on the incredible array of fish, coral, and rays rather than on water getting into your tube, visibility issues, or getting cold. Also a yacht docked on the island while we were there, as some of the more well-heeled travelers arrive on their own yachts. It was very interesting to us "tourists", and I never felt for one moment that preferential treatment was given to some guests over others. Overall, I would say that our experience at Caye Chapel was fantastic and we wish that it was NOT a once-in-a-lifetime adventure, but that we could get back there again some time.

“One of the best vacations ever-everyone should go once”

This was our second trip to Belize, our first was a stay at Ramon's on San Pedro, Ambergis Caye. While we were impressed with Ramon's on that trip, that was NOTHING compared to Caye Chapel Resort. In a nutshell, if you are looking for privacy, golf, being treated like royalty and an absolutely inexpensive way to do so, you have found your heaven. (We'll comment on our second trip back to Ramon's, we should have never done it and stayed here the whole time.)

CHECK-IN: When our flight from Belize City arrived on the island (we don't recommend the VERY crowded water taxi), we were greeted by Charles in our his and hers golf carts, complete with a 6 pack of cold Bilikin (local beers) on ice. We followed Charles as he showed us the main part of the hotel (really restaurant and golf shop). He informed us that we would be spending one night in the casita (which we booked) and then we were being upgraded (for free) the next morning and for the remainder of our 5 day stay in one of the beach front houses because it was available. WOW!

ACCOMODATIONS: The casita was pretty, like a small suite and included a kitchenette and a small patio with a table and chairs. The house is indescribeable. The fridge was fully stocked with light beer, dark beer and water. Water was $1 and beer was $2! Have you ever heard such a thing? Our place was immaculate all the time. We had sattelite TV, phones, stereo, etc.

SAFE: No locals are allowed on the island (unless you are very, very wealthy), so it is incredibly safe. We never brought our golf clubs in the house. They stayed outside in the cart the entire time.
POOL: Small, but nice. The 5 days we were there, we were only joined by another couple or family twice.
PRIVACY: They only allow a small amount of people on the island at a certain time. I think we saw all of 20 people the entire time we were there. You have your own private beach with the house, so we highly recommend the house over the casita. While the island is secluded, Charles is sure to make sure you have any form of transportation you need. You don't feel like a character on LOST.

THE GOLF: No tee times! Walk on the course at any time and at any hole! While the course is fairly simple, it is gorgeous. You don't even need to wear a shirt or shoes! You can golf in your swim suit! Charles greeted us on one of the holes to see if we needed anything. We asked for a Margarita and he brought us an entire pitcher with chips! Let's not forget the crocodiles. Yep, I said crocs! We spotted about 5 on our trip in the ponds around the course. Very cool.
THE SERVICE: Unparalled to anywhere we've been and that includes all the major Hyatt, Hilton and Waldorf Resorts from Puerto Rico to Hawaii and Mexico.
WHAT'S THE CATCH? We still haven't figured it out. Everything about this place is perfect
THE STAFF: Charles helped us get whatever we needed. He fished with us at the end of the pier every night. He booked a fishing charter boat for us that took us trolling, deep sea fishing and showed us many parts of the islands around Belize that we didn't see on our first trip. He ordered us the water taxi when we wanted to go shopping in San Pedro and out to dinner.
THE FOOD: The food is slightly above average and the menu small, but what can you expect when the chef is only cooking for maybe 20 a night. You have to eat lunch between 11:30 and 1:00 and breakfast has a set time as well, but you can get room service for breakfast or dinner and lunch can be poolside or on the golf course.
THE BUGS: We figured out these little sand fleas by our last day. My husband never got bit, but I did. They come out mainly at dusk. I learned by day 3 not to be outside from 4:30 to 6:30 and if I was to put some major bug spray on. That worked. They don't bother you when the sun is high.

We booked 5 days here (as we weren't sure we could stand the seclusion), and 4 days at Ramon's as our first experience there was a good one. After Caye Chapel, I'm not sure any hotel could have held their own after our visit. Our trip back to Ramon's was in the Presidential Suite (boy did it look small this time back) and the service was mediocre (despite our large tips and previous stay).

We highly recommend Caye Chapel to anyone!

“Loved this place!”

My husband and I just returned from a vacation at Caye Chapel. What a little slice of paradise! The casitas are very roomy for a couple and the villas are vast! The casita was clean, but a little spartanly decorated. Apparently, they don't bother with keys to your accommodations since there are no theft problems, but there is a safe available in every room.
Cynthia was amazing... went to every length to make sure our stay was perfect. The rest of the staff were also great and seemed to love to serve us and keep us happy. The bartender was a real artiste!
The food was good, but not gourmet. We had a very special dinner on the pier one night... highly recommended.
We golfed every day. The course was tough, but beautifully maintained and mostly deserted. If you have a big slice or hook, bring lots of balls!
We also took the snorkelling trip, which is not to be missed. Petting tame sting rays was a real experience!
The pool area/hot tub are also very nice and we enjoyed having a few lunches there.
We also biked around the property and enjoyed the small gym.
A perfect vacation if you enjoy tranquility and not a lot of people. However, the people we met there were also unbelievably friendly and hospitable.
We'll be back!

“Great Island for a Wedding!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 November 2008

Caye Chapel Island Resort (Belize) was the perfect destination wedding island resort. Our friends just moved from Atlanta to Rio and picked this island based on reviews and referrals without visiting the island in advance - after spending a fabulous time there, I would recommend any other prospective couple to gain comfort in selecting this location in a similar fashion.

This particular wedding had 40 guests but up to double that would be comfortable. All guests fly into Belize and then get to Caye Chapel on an "Island-hopper" plane. Upon arrival, all guests had their own golf carts as a fun way to roam around the island.

Key highlights were:
- Cynthia, who manages the resort, is very organized and prompt; for example, on the wedding rehearsal day, she clearly articulated the significance of punctuality for the 3pm ceremony and the corresponding window of time for post-wedding photographs due to the sunset.
- all staff members were friendly, competent and highly attentive and the food was great
- the island was self-contained and lots of fun (tennis, golf, bikes, volleyball, basketball, the beach, kayaking, great departure point for diving and snorkelling tours - we swam with nurse sharks and rays)
- there were two main options for accommodation - the less expensive Casita, which was decent-sized, and the very large Villas on the water, which are basically 2 to 3 bedroom houses (i.e., 2500 to 3500 square feet!)
- Crocs on the island (rarely seen but worth noting)
- the only cons would be sand flies on the beach (i.e., we didn't use any, but bring repellant!)

  • Liked — The island was beautiful and self-contained.
  • Disliked — Sand flies on the beach.

3. Clean accommodations.
4. Great waiters.
5. Great white chocolate / cherry cookies.

Cons:
1. The front desk staff is not very friendly or happy to be there.
2. Room didn't have much character / theme. A little bland.
3. Food wasn't very good.
