“Wonderful hotel in a stunning location”

My husband and I stayed at the Hotel Cortisen for a week in July 2011. We couldn't fault the hotel for style, comfort, hospitality and location - a real gem. The view from our room looking out on Lake Wolfgangsee was wonderful and the lakeside garden, relaxation area and bathing platform were perfect. The afternoon cake was a nice bonus! It's a family run hotel and Roland and his mother were especially helpful. A truly memorable holiday for all the right reasons. St Wolfgang is a beautiful town and our hotel was just a short walk from the main shops, cafes and boat stations. We were also just a few minutes walk from the Shafberg railway which is a must when the sun is shining (it was when we did it) - amazing views! There are good boat and bus links to other local towns and lots of interesting areas to visit. Would definitely go back - to St Wolfgang and Hotel Cortisen.

“Curate's Egg! Recommended with reservations!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 December 2011

We arrived mid afternoon at the start of the Advent season. We were welcomed warmly, offered help with luggage and asked if we wanted dinner that evening as they had only 6 other guests. We declined and ate in the village. The room was really very pleasant, though the bath in the room was at first a surpise. At least the WC is behind closed doors! But it did make the room rather damp and steamy and there is no air con so one had to open windows and let more foggy air in from the lake. There is no control to the heating either so at night it is a question of swelter or open the balcony doors to fog and wind. Although we were on the top floor there was an awful lot of noise from above from very early on Sunday morning - about 7 am. So I am not sure who lives in the attic but they need reminding that there are poeple below. The big surprise for a hotel of this class was that when we returned on the first evening at 9 pm, cold and tired, the entire public area was locked up. This would not matter so much if the hotel provided coffee and tea making faclities in the room but it doesn't (and to be fair most Austrian hotels do not but I think it is exceptional to have no service at all after 9 pm). This was remember a 4 star hotel not Zimmerfrei. Having said that negatively, the breakfast was very good (eggs cooked to order), and served in room with superb views. Over the weekend the hotel remained open in the evenings and we had a drink in te bar where the service was very pleasant and prices perfectly reasonable. The gym is state of the art, and the views are state of nature! The location perfect. the tiny car park is challenging but we left our keys and they were happy to move cars around when needed. At least it was free and parking generally in Sankt Wolfgang is expensive. St W is touristed of course but I like it and have stayed in many hotels here over the yars and in a few Ferienwohnung too. In summer I think it is worth being out towards Reid - easy parking and quieter location and still only 20 m walk from the village. But for the Advent market and such this hotel is perfect. I am surprised reading reviews about rude staff as I found the staff all very polite and charming. We also found the room entirely clean though one small piece of soap between two for a three night stay was a trifle parsimonious. But we remembered to ask for more of the excellent bath salts and were readily supplied with them. We forgot to ask for more soap, but then again should we have had to? There is a mini bar but the stock is pretty basic, especially given that you might find that the owners have decided not to bother opening the bar - or even unlocking the public rooms. I would certainly check that when booking in low season. All in all, yes I would recommend it. I can see that some think the owners have a take it or leave it mentality. But they have in the past catered for package tours and if they have had to cope with that then I can forgive them a little impatience with guests who expect 5 star treatment for 2 star prices. I talked with Roland Ballner when I left and found him entirely affable, but probably not a man who suffers fools gladly.

Room Tip: Choose a lake side room with balcony.

“Great hotel in a great location”

We stayed here for 2 nights earlier this week and it was lovely. We were welcomed warmly by Roland, shown to our lakeside room & offered a better one with a bath if we wanted but we were more than happy with this room. He gave us map of the town and area & also let us know that the advent market would be shut for the next few days so make sure we visited it that sunday afternoon - this was most appreaciative. The restaurant food is absolutely the best - the chef is to be commended on the standard of food presented each night.
All the staff were very friendly and helpful.
The towels & bathrobes are quite threadbare and for the quality of the rest of the hotel were a let down - but this is really a minor issue.
Unfortunately for us we were not aware that the entire town is closed but just our poor timing, certainly not hotels fault - thank gooodness for the DVD player & supplied range of DVD's.
Would love to return in summer one day & would definitely recommend to friends - love the no young children policy!

“Great, relaxing stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 October 2011

Stayed in mid-October and was pleasantly surprised. The exterior of the hotel was rather non-descript but the interior was beautiful and sophisticated. The decoration was eclectic but done with great taste and fine details. We were upgraded to a suite with a fantastik lake view and it was big, with a jacuzzi integrated to the room space. Rudolph, the owner was specially gracious and even made us a map for an out- of-the-way ride which took us to the most spectacular scenery and charming places. The restaurant was excellent, once we tried it we looked no more. It was a truly relaxing and romantic.

Room Tip: A lake- view room is a must, preferably a suite.

“Heaven...”

We have returned to the Hotel Cortisen time & time again, why ? because it's just perfect. Everything about the hotel is just wonderful, the location, the bedrooms which are well maintained & perfectly clean, the friendly staff only too willing to help & the food in the restaurant, just scrummy. The breakfast in particular is to die for... what a choice...
We admire Roland for adopting his 'No Young Children' policy, how nice it is to find somewhere that you can simply relax without screaming children running riot in the hotel.
The hotel itself is ideally situated, a bus stop virtually opposite, the boat stop just yards around the corner, ski-hire next door which runs the ski-bus to the slopes, so you only have yards to walk with all your ski-gear, a door to door service!
We will be back & that's a promise !

Room Tip: Budget permitting, choose a lakeside room. Beautiful views & possibly a little quieter, although...
