I traveled to this hotel for a mother-daughter vacation at Christmas. The hotel and St. Wolfgang itself were very Christmasy. There is a Christmas market right outside the hotel & at midnight on Christmas Eve, horns played "Silent Night" several times from the picturesque church right next to the hotel. You can't get more Christmasy than Austria and this hotel is in a truly gorgeous spot.
The lake and the spa make this hotel. The views of the lake and the snow-tipped mountains from the outdoor hot tub in the middle of winter are unbeatable. The spa isn't huge - it has an outdoor pool, an indoor pool, a sauna, a soft sauna (sort of like a hammam), the hot tub, two steam rooms and several very lovely rooms in which to relax. Nearly all of the facilities, including the sauna, look right onto the lake so it is really a nice place to spend a day. Some of the spa areas are adults-only which is good if you want quiet (there is also a kid's playroom next to the pool).
The other public areas of the hotel are also nice. The staff are very friendly and smile and greet guests in the hallways.
Because it was Christmas and many things were not open we took half-board for two of our three nights. The food was delicious and a good value for what you get, but I am not sure I would want half-board more than two nights because dinner is a four-course meal (soup, appetizer, entree, and dessert). The breakfast buffet is also huge. You really don't need to eat lunch if you are on half-board! One thing that is nice is that "your" table is reserved for the entire dinner time so you can eat whenever you like between 6:30 & 9:00 and do not have to worry about making reservations or eating at a specific time.
My single room was large for a European single room. The bathroom was new and super clean, but the wood furniture & decor in the room could use a bit of updating. The hotel provided a box of Christmas cookies and apple cake which is a nice touch and there were all kinds of books about the area to read in the room (unfortunately, all in German, but it is an Austrian hotel, so that is to be expected).
The town of St. Wolfgang is cute - it has some touristy shops and a few restaurants. There is a network of well-marked walking paths above the town (the walk back from Strobl to St. Wolfgang is an easy 45 minutes to an hour and the first half is on a path of boardwalks above the lake which is really pretty; the second half is along the road but the walk is worth it for the first half). You can also ride a boat around the lake to St. Gilgen and Strobl which also have small Christmas markets. If you are going for the markets, you might want to go before Christmas as just after the holiday the markets were kind of quiet and about half of the stalls were closed.
Overall this is a really nice place to stay and you cannot beat the views of the lake!
