We chose the Thayer because we were staying with family in Minnesota and wanted a short getaway while our child stayed with the grandparents. Of course, the ghost hunting classes and high teas really got our attention.
When we first got there, we were a bit surprised to see the hotel sat on a major street. But the second we walked through the door, it didn't matter at all. Sharon Gammell has done an amazing job of creating a place that feels far away from the stresses of daily life. The place is decorated so authentically with period furnishings that you really feel like you could be in another place and time. It felt protected and relaxing.(and yes, the breakfast was simply phenomenal)
We came mid-week, so we missed some of the organized activities, but we got an even greater bonus because we got to spend time talking to Sharon, who is a uniquely insightful, thoughtful and interesting person. Aside from the little touches like being greeted with a lovely welcome note, and cookies and chocolate, we just enjoyed talking to Sharon who is a talented psychic, chef and business-owner. We felt right at home there.
As to the ghosts, well, I heard footsteps upstairs at about 3am when no one was awake up there. I suppose it could have been her cats, but one of her staff said there’s often a ghost that walks down the hall. Who knows. Sharon says the ghosts are her friends. I believe it. We’ll definitely be back as often as we can, and we’re urging relatives to go for a high tea family gathering.
