“Best for golfers, however it's a nice place for non-golfers to getaway”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 August 2011

My wife and I don't golf. I tried it years ago and was never good at it, so... I don't golf.

The reason we stayed here is that my wife won a package to Yarrow through a charity auction at a great price with the intention of visiting some local attractions in the Kalamazoo and Battle Creek area. We arrived late in the evening and it was a little hard to find in the dark (the light must have been out on the sign). As we entered the property, we noticed that the grounds and gardens (which had some lighting), looked very nice.

After getting our room key, we drove around to the back where our room was located. The standard rooms are in (2) two story units with exterior access. Access is provided down a lighted boardwalk in the woods (which reminded me of "The Homestead" up in Glen Arbor, Mi.). The building is arranged so that the rooms have windows on both sides, so that you can get a nice breeze if the weather cooperates.

The rooms are trimmed in laquered pine and have a cozy cottage feel. Our room came with two queen beds, which I felt were just right, not too hard, not too soft. Nothing fancy in the bathrooms, though the shampoos and soaps were a little nicer than the standard types at most hotel chains.

To me, the breakfast was the best part. The bacon and scrambled eggs were cooked just the way I like them. I can tell the bacon that they use was of a very high quality and tasted wonderful. I think the only time I ate more bacon was at Tony's in Birch run, Mi. Breakfast hours are 7:00am to 9:00am at the main lodge. Room checkout is at 10:00am on weekdays.

Overall, I really enjoyed my stay here, and would reccommend it .... especially to golfers. Oh, by the way, the course, from what I could see, was beautiful.

“Great Place That is Relaxed, Cozy, and Comfortable”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 May 2009

We have held a golf outing here for the past three years with 12-16 women, and we will keep coming back. We always have a great time. The golf package is a great value and it's an easy two hour ride from Detroit suburbs. There is a main log-cabin lodge that includes a small restaurant/bar and some larger meeting and banquet rooms. The menu is fairly simple, but the food has always been good. Excellent soups and a variety of sandwiches and salads. Our package always includes a buffet dinner and breakfast, which are both great food and value. The breakfast buffet includes a nice selection of juice, pastries, breads, cereal, yogurt, fruit, scrambled eggs/cheese, potatoes, bacon, sausage and lots of coffee. Dinner typically includes two soups (always delicious), two salads, rolls, stuffed chicken, beef tenderloin, vegetable medley, potatoes, and a table full of dessert selections.

One of the highlights of Yarrow is the huge deck high above the 18th hole. It feels like "up north", with large trees and a woodsy feel. They have patio heaters, which they cranked up for us on a cool night. Our group always ends up sitting out here for the wonderful views, good drinks, and casual setting. Weather permitting, we like to eat on the deck, ordering from the restaurant menu.

Overnight rooms are in two separate buildings that are connected to the lodge with a short path through the woods. The buildings are long and two stories with outdoor entrances, somewhat like a motel. They face out to very woodsy setting looking down a large hill to the first hole of the golf course. The rooms aren't "resort fancy", but they are clean and comfortable.

The golf course itself is well maintained and a pleasure to play. Golf packages also offer rounds at other local courses. We love Stonehedge, which is only five minutes away (the South course is a favorite). Another beautiful course is Gull Lake View, about 10 minutes from Yarrow. The East course is beautiful and with lots of big hills.

Both when planning our trip and actually staying at Yarrow, the management, wait staff, and golf course staff have provided us with very helpful and friendly service. We will definitely return and would recommend it to anyone. Just keep in mind that this is not a fancy resort/spa with jacuzzis, massages, swimming pools and elegant restaurants. What it IS, is a casual, relaxed and affordable spot for golf or other activity.

“No pool but otherwise GREAT!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 July 2008

We stayed here after we discovered the hotel we HAD booked (Gull Lake Inn) was a disastrous flea-trap. We stumbled upon this when we did numerous searches on Google for a place to stay near the Barn Theater (they do GREAT summer-stock productions!).

There were really no other options but to stay in Battle Creek or Kalamazoo in a "they all look the same" chain hotel.

The Yarrow has a great golf course which the hubby loved. The rooms are in a "lodge" (actually one of two apartment-looking style buildings) tucked way back in the trees. The rooms were simple and nice. Not luxurious but nice. Our air condition was very noisy but it was quite cool at night when we were there so we didn't need it.

There is only one restaurant (a pub) and no pool (much to my 9 and 12-year old's dismay). We were there mainly to see a production of "Les Miserables" at the nearby Barn Theater (highly recommend).

There is a included breakfast at the Yarrow Lodge which was plentiful and good (eggs, breakfast meats, french toast, cereals, pastries, juices, etc.)

All in all...my rating is a B+. Would be an A+ if they had a pool!!!
