“Worst hotel experience ever!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 February 2012

We stayed here at a discounted rate because a relative new the owners. So we put up with more than we normally would. First the pool was cloudy, the hot tub smelled like a swamp, the first night and the next afternoon it was colder than the pool. The "free" wifi was disabled and the hotel worker did not even know the name of the connection or how to access it.Apparently the continental breakfast that they advertised is only seasonal and we were there off season! All this we delt with, but after we returned to our room following a day out with the family we noticed our stuff had been rummaged through and cash was missing. When we reported this to the owner he immediately called my husband a liar. They claim they were only in there cleaning the room, but only 1 bed was made, the garbage had not been emptied and the clean towels were simply laying on the bed, (under the bag that had been rummaged through.) We are a middle aged couple with 2 young children, were are not hoodlums that should be accused of lying when reporting a loss to a business owner! We were booked for 2 nights but obviously left after making out police report and finding out the 2 cell phones and a wallet had been stolen the same day! NEVER AGAIN! Thank God for the econo lodge down the road, they also rented to us for an even higher dicounted rate than harbor, the pool is clean and the hot tub is hot and clean, the rooms are clean, and the owners were very friendly and accomadating.

Room Tip: Go to ECONO LODGE if your in AuGres!

“Dont judge a book by its cover.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 November 2011 via mobile

Due to circumstances we have had to stay at the Harbor Inn for some time. I will say that it is not as updated as the other hotel in town but they offer much more than just a room. The owner and his family are truly great people and will do anything possible to make sure you are comfortable. The staff are all incredible and very accomadating. Although the rooms may not be updated we found them very comfortable. They also have a pool, hot tub and gym for the guests to use. There are many mixed reviews but I have enjoyed staying here.

“Of the two motels in au Gres stay here, but only if you have too”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 November 2011

Au Gres, MI is a small fishing port community that seems to have somehow allowed the properity of waterfront to pass it by. there are only two motels in town. I walked into then out of an Econo-Lodge. Read others review on that dump. This property may simply be reflecting the lack of vacation and recreation dollars spent in this town. The mid-week room rate was $50 "cash". i would have thought that $30 - $35 might have been more fair. to be honest - I felt kind of good giving my money to the owner. This is a family run place that is apparently struck by the rough economy of Michigan. Kids pictures are in the lobby along with Pinewood Derby cars on display. There are a few cats walking around the place. the room was, well, rough. there was a prominent hole punched in the wall near the door. There was a TV that was powered by an electrical cord plugged into an extension cord that ran through a freestanding clothes wardrobe, that had holes cut in the side and back so that the extension cord could be plugged into the wall socket. Not exactly to code - know what I mean? Read as a fire hazard. This motel looks like it was last updated in the 1970's. BAD carpet, indistrial grade, matted and stained. the beds had clean sheets, but no blanket. the bed spread was apparently supposed to do for a blanket. I typically remove the spread, since they are rarely laundered. Oh well.... The bathroom was rough. there was a prominent crack in the tub-shower liner which could likely cause a foot to be cut (or rear end if taking a bath). There was no iron or hair dryer in the room.

The heat in the room is controlled by a very old through the wall heater. there was one setting, either hot or off. the thermostat was shot.

windows in the room could not be locked, so I had to wonder if some thief might simply slide the window open and enter.

This property does have an indoor pool and hot tub, which you would have to pay 50% more for in nearby Tawas City. The pool appeared clean, clear and wekk maintained.

The reality is this is of the two properties that I would stay at if I had to stay in Au Gres. That is not saying much. try to dicker and get your best deal. Offer $40 mid week. In reality Tawas City is 20 minutes away, and has far better motels for less money, or for a little bit more very nice properties. I'd suggest the Bay Inn just south of Tawas City on US-23, about 20 minutes north..

Room Tip: Do not accept a $100 rate. I would not offer more than $50, even on a weekend. Ask to check the roo...

“Gross! What a rip-off!!!!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 August 2011

We were in town and found this as our only choice when it came to hotels. When I booked the room at the "discounted" rate of $100 per night, I was thinking that it would be quite the place because it was so pricey! Boy were we surprised. The lobby was filthy and smelled horrible. When we got to the room, it was even worse! Stained carpet, missing wallpaper, broken locks on the windows, stained matresses, mildewy stench --nothing was acceptable, even to the most desperate of travelers. We refused to even take off our shoes to walk around the place. Do NOT stay in this place - the owners should be totally ASHAMED that they charge what they do. Too bad there aren't other places to stay - they would go out of business in no time. Word of advice -- stay in one of the local campgrounds. Even sleeping on the ground in a tent would be better than this place.

Room Tip: STAY AWAY!!!!!!! There is no way that anyone should settle for a room in this place. Disgusting!

“GROSS!!!!!!!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 August 2011

We had no choice but to stay here. I now wish we had slept in the car . When we opened the door to the room I was immediatly sickened. This place was a filthy dump. I don't think I slept more than an hour all night . We were gone by 7 am. the next morning. We were charged $99 to stay there. What a rip off. DON'T STAY HERE, unless you like filthy, gross, crumbling, smelly, falling apart rooms. Gross....... after I write this I'll never think of it again. Makes me sick.
