“A pleasant surprise in Ann Arbor”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 September 2011

Normally we stay at the Hampton Inn Ann Arbor North or the Hampton Inn South when we go to U of M Hospital every two weeks because we have been members of the Hilton Honors program and this hotel offers a special hospital rate. They have been making the hospital rate unavailable frequently recently and we had find another hotel. We were not looking forward to going to the Hawthorne Suites but were more than pleasantly surprised. The room was enormous compared to the micro sized rooms at the Hampton Inns (both North and South). The room came with a full size refrigerator with an ice maker, stove, microwave and disposal. It also included pots, pans, utensils, cups, glass glasses and dishes.

The breakfast was excellent and compared to what's offered at the Hampton Inns. The breakfast even included Miso soup for the many Asian guests that work at or for the Toyota engineering center located near by.

Only down side is that the hotel doesn't offer anything but double or queen size beds and only has one elevator to service a rather large hotel. While there wasn't a problem on the Sunday night we were there I expect that it becomes a problem when the hotel has more guests.

“Adequate, but nothing special.”

We stayed at this location for a total of three nights, and we stayed in one of the suites. The suites have two bedrooms, a full kitchen and a living area with a sofa bed. Our stay was adequate, but I don’t know if we would stay again. If you are looking for a place to stay when visiting the University of Michigan Hospital or campuses, this would be a great location. There is a grocery store, which is positioned in a small mall, literally within walking distance from the hotel. There are several fast food and sit down dining locations within a five minute driving radius.

Out of fairness, I have listed what I believe to be the pros and cons of staying in this hotel, based on our experience. I gave this location a poor rating, because the lack of cleanliness of the rooms and the lack of assistance or empathy from the staff.

Here are the highlights:
1. Complimentary "full" breakfast (buffet style) every morning.
2. Complimentary evening meal (buffet style), Monday thru Friday.
3. Free shuttle service.
4. Free Wi-Fi.
5. Indoor pool and hot tub. We didn’t use it, but it looks nice and appeared well-maintained.
6. They have an agreement with the University of Michigan Hospital, which is about 10 minutes away, and the hotel provides a discounted rate if you have a family member staying in the hospital.
7. The beds were very comfortable.
8. There is a fitness center downstairs, which is adequate and very clean.

Here are the not-so-highlights:
1. The breakfast is limited. They provide powdered eggs (ugh), one meat: bacon or sausage, a limited fruit selection - but not every day, bread for toast and a waffle maker. One of the days, they had fried potatoes.
2. The shuttle service is limited to availability and not punctual, so don't rely on it.
3. The housekeeping was lackluster, but very friendly whenever we encountered them in the hallways. The living area and beds in our rooms were clean, but when we opened the sofa bed for our kids, we found crumpled papers and a book. After finding the papers and the book, we looked under the beds and found more papers, so the housekeeping staff obviously doesn’t spend a great deal of time cleaning the rooms.
4. As I have read on previous posts, the guest-relations staff is not friendly and has a blasé attitude about customer service. I won’t mention full names, but Ch***ka (front desk) and U*e (hotel manager) were not helpful and indifferent when we were addressing the lack of cleanliness of our suite and tardiness of the shuttle.
5. There is only one elevator, so if it stops working, you are stuck with using the stairs (it happened to us).

“Best Beds”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 August 2011

We stopped here for an overnite while driving north. We had 2 BR's and a sleeper sofa. We had 2 adults and 4 kids and were quite comfortable. The beds were fantastic; high, soft but not slumpy, with great linens and pillows.
A continental breakfast was included that was one of the best I had ever had( as far as complimentary breakfasts go.) They cater to oriental tastes and even included a miso soup and sticky rice.
Watch out for the main matron at the breakfast though. She is in your face and not afraid to tell you of the rules and she watdhes the dining area like a hawk.
We spent 200 for the nite includes tax.
There was a very nice pool and spa area and an outside bball court and mini tennis area that looked quite nice.

“very comfortable”

I stay here whenever I visit my daughter at University of Michigan. The beds are comfortable, the rooms are spacious, and I really love to use the pool and exercise room. Plus I can drive straight into town on Plymouth Road and park downtown to walk to the games.

“Excellent”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 June 2011

I didn't encounter the breakfast room staff problem mentioned by another review, nor did I have any other poor experience with hotel management or staff during a two-night stay.

The hotel has an outdoor basketball court (also usable for other outdoor sport), and a basketball can be borrowed from the front desk.

Perhaps I missed a sign, but I don't think the court (street) leading to the hotel is marked at its intersection with another street. However, I mention that only as an alert to people planning to stay at the hotel, not to in any way discourage use of the hotel. I suspect almost everyone will either realize without problem that they are at the correct intersection or will easily and quickly see the glitch shortly after passing the intersection and be easily able to return and make the turn.

In addition to free copies of USA Today, the hotel had a stack of one or two Asian-language (Japanese, I think) publications available in the breakfast/reception room, and some Asian food choices were among the items available at breakfast.

Make-them-yourself waffles were among the breakfast items, as were scrambled eggs, hot and cold cereal, juices, fresh fruit and other items. I did not see yogurt.

The "light dinner" or reception is offered Monday through Thursday night. The menu varies. It was posted on my room's refrigerator.

I think one or two grocery stores are a short distance from the hotel. This is noteworthy because guest rooms have refrigerators and other kitchen facilities. Also, near the check-in desk is a refrigerator/freezer case which has about three different frozen dinners (what I call TV dinners) and some ice cream treats.

I think another reviewer mentioned placement of the in-room TV. In my room, it was atop a three-drawer chest of drawers — neither too high nor too low.

Provided in the kitchen were knives, forks, sons, plates, drinking glasses, mugs, and cooking gear.

This was my first experience with this brand of hotel. Although I understand that properties within the brand could vary, I am impressed so far.
