My son and I stayed 2 nights because of a long hockey weekend in Alpena. There were 3 hockey teams staying there at once and basically the only customers they had. We were told we were being given a discounted rate but it was what you would get discounted for staying 2 nights anyway.
The pros: The staff wasn't after the kids for everything and watching them like hawks like at some hotels when you check in as a team. The pool was warm and there was a small area adjacent to it with tables where we ate while the kids swam. The rooms and bedding were clean and the pillows were decent. There are refrigerators in every room and a microwave in the breakfast room that you can use any time. The 2 queen room had plenty or room to lay out up to 2 bags of gear to dry. The tub in our room was very deep and looked brand new.
The cons: The beds were flat out awful. Fine for younger kids but I tossed and turned all night. There was a weird smell in our room when we checked in that never went away. The breakfast only had hard boiled eggs for protein. One parent tried to pay with cash and offered a substantail amount over the bill to be held for incidentals and they turned him away. The decor is very dated and the alarm clock looked like it was from the 80's, I didn't dare trust it. Don't count on getting a late check out. There are no elevators at this hotel and the free internet had spotty connection. The staff for the most part was apathetic.
All in all it was sufficient for what we were there for although overpriced for what you get. I will try a different hotel next time we are in Alpena for an overnight.
