“Bad service”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 December 2011

We arrived around 11 pm in the hostel. We booked online for a private double room, when the guy showed us the room it was not yet cleaned. He even asked us if the yoghurt and the cups were ours!! It smelled very badly of sigarettes and there was no window. We asked for another room, we got a triple bedroom (one single bed and a bunkbed). We asked for 2 towels and he made us pay for them. I asked for a refund on the room, but because we had 3 beds that was not possible. We didn't even have the double bed. Plus there was a used hairbrush on one of the beds. We asked if it was possible to have a beer, there was no beer and then to order some food, like a pizza or something. He said it was no problem, but after a quick shower (dirty bathrooms with floss in the toilet) the reception was closed and dark. The guy was nowhere tobe found. So with no food and the wrong type of room we went to bed.
The next morning we only paid for a dorm, so that was the only service they provided... We left immediatly.
Too bad, because normally we have good experiences with Hi Hostels in South America.

“One of my favourite hostels in South America”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 August 2011

I chose the HI hostel only for its location near the bus station. It felt like a heaven to arrive there after constant freezing in Potosi. The beds were comfortable and the rooms nice and warm. The beds have personal reading lamps!!! The owner and the staff were really helpful and friendly. I stayed in the 6-room dormitory for almost a week. Most of the visitors, however stay only one night because the hotel is located a bit away from the centre. If you don't mind the walking, I would say that the HI hostel is a very good choice!!

“Extremely poor value for money”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 December 2010

We arrived at the bus station in the evening after a long journey and went to HI Sucre because it was five minutes' walk away. The only room they could offer us was 200 Bs which is expensive for Bolivia, especially a hostel. We stayed because it was late but found it to be very poor value for money. The room was okay, a bit old-fashioned, although had a large bathroom with shower cubicle (unusual for Bolivia) and cable TV. The shower was not great and turned hot and cold. One plus point was that the bed had a duvet which was great after weeks of blankets and sheets.

There was free wi-fi in the lobby but it didn't work in the room. Computers cost 3Bs an hour. Breakfast was not included which at 200Bs a night I would have expected it to be. The kitchen was rather unpleasant; grimey and with very few cooking facilities. the location is bad, near the bus station, which is a dodgy area (we were offered an escort from one of the tourist police) and a good 20 minute walk from the centre of Sucre. You can get much better further into the city centre.

“basic but special”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 August 2010

It's rather far from the city centre but if you like/want some walking, it's ok, one street up and down. Ask room 26 or 27 if you're with 2, great rooms. Service and organisation of hostal are worthless (a lot of volunteers over there) but if you can manage your one holidays no prob and if you want to take (or took) the (long distance) bus, perfect location ! Don't expect that they will understand english but if necessary one of the volunteers (we saw a lot of germans) will translate. Internet costs money and is a bit slow. Nice garden and you can cook yourself.

“Good hostel, shame about the location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 March 2009

Overall, this was a good place to stay (and a welcome relief after the horrible place in Potosi!). It was clean, had comfy beds and DUVETS (hurray!)! The shared bathrooms were kept clean and had hot water (had to wait a little while for it to come through one morning but it did eventually.!). The staff were friendly. It was fairly expensive at US$17 per night for a double room (i.e for 2 people) but good value. It was close and very easy to find from the bus station.

There was a kitchen (we didn´t use it because Sucre is meant to be the food capital of Bolivia! - but others did so it must have functioned ok) and a garden patio area with chairs. There was also a random dining hall with anitique-looking furniture and a long banqueting table in it! Very old fashioned chic... cool, but a large space that could probably be put to a more practical use!

There are only 3 negatives:
Firstly, the location isn´t great - it´s a good 30 min walk to the main square. It´s downhill all the way so we usually got a taxi back in the dark for about 8 Bols. Secondly, the TV "room" is just a corridor outside some bedrooms - we never used it because it would be disturbing to other people. No big deal really though. Thirdly, there was no bar, so it was nigh on impossible to meet anyone unless you are staying in a dorm or cooking in the kitchen. Perhaps they should convert that bizarre dining room!
