A medium sized, luxury hotel attached to the casino in the modern part of this watering place for the Chilean middle and upper classes. Right on the sea, all the rooms have panoramic sea views and they are magnificently appointed, as well as being enormous with vast, comfortable beds. Bathrooms are similarly large and well equipped, while the main lobby and restaurants are impeccable. Staff are highly professional, if rather on the formal side of helpfulness. We did not eat in the hotel apart from breakfast, which was predictable international buffet style and lacked the individuality one might expect from a hotel of this standard (and cost). There is free WiFi throughout the hotel and it worked seamlessly throughout the week we stayed. The most dramatic feature of the hotel is undoubtedly its rooftop indoor spa and health club, with a very well equipped gym, swimming pool and jacuzzi, all supervised by very efficient staff. If there was a complaint, it would be that the pool is very warm and highly chlorinated - designed more for splashing than real swimming. This is particularly the case during the regular organised aquaerobics classes which take up most of the pool, but they are rich sources of entertainment and an education in how “exercise” can be turned into a social gathering, cocktails included! These quibbles are more than made up for by the dramatic views of the ocean from everywhere in the spa however. The hotel is connected directly to the casino, so don’t come here if you prefer not to have to walk through smoke-filled rooms of full of slot machines and gambling tables to get to the nearest cafes or shops. However, Las Vegas it’s not and it’s very easy to pretend none of it is there if you prefer. One surprising aspect of the set up is the lack of an informal bar area, meaning that it was impossible to have a drink or coffee without going to one of the restaurants, or using the casino (perhaps the reason for the arrangement?). However the Enjoy café which is right on the seafront nearby and belongs to the hotel, serves the best coffee I came across in Chile and is also a great place for people watching. Overall despite the rather dowdy website, this is a luxurious hotel with all the trimmings which lives up to its prices.
Vina itself is a somewhat soulless place, reminiscent of some of the more upmarket Mediterranean costas. This is particularly so in the modern area, which is dominated by high rise apartment blocks crowding for a seaview. However it is in a great setting on the Pacific, with some excellent beaches nearby and there is a good selection of restaurants etc, as well as some elegant buildings and gardens. The older part of the city is quite a contrast and for an even more vivid insight into another way of life in Chile, take the 15 minute metro ride into Valparaiso. Now a UNESCO World Heritage site because of its hillside barrios accessed by funicular railways, it was once one of the major ports of the Pacific ocean. However it fell on hard times after the opening of the Panama canal and it’s only in the last few years that efforts have been made to revive it. Although there are some areas which have been renovated and are trying to develop a bohemian atmosphere, be aware that it’s very much a work in progress, rather than the finished article. The majority of the city is very dilapidated and dirty and a tourist can feel extremely uncomfortable in many areas. A 1.9m tall member of our group was the victim of an attempted mugging in a crowded square in broad daylight, so although it’s worth a visit, be careful.
