Of all the budget hotels and hostels we’ve visited in the Middle East, Europe and Latin America (Brazil), this was far the dirtiest. Echoing a number of other evaluations on this hotel, the staff did not seem too enthusiastic about their work and usually attended our requests regarding missing or non-functional items only after asked twice. Nevertheless, that was little compared to the appalling level of hygiene.
Upon arrival, we were given a room that smelled strongly of tar. After trying everything (air conditioning high, air conditioning off, window open, window closed), the smell still persisted. Luckily another similar room (minus the smell) was available. Looked at from a distance everything seemed ok, but a closer look revealed a room with which one preferred to be in as little physical contact as possible (luckily the sheets at least were clean… well, except on the last day when our bed had one white and one grey-toned pillow cover...).
Among the most disgusting items were:
- A desk chair/bench that looked like it had gone through a series of high school parties involving large quantities of alcohol and greasy fast food (see photo);
- A kitchen bin that seemed to have suffered the same fate (see photo);
- A kitchen so dirty it was as good as no kitchen (see photo);
- Blood stains(!!!) on the bathroom wall;
- Towels with grey stains (not just on one but several days – see photo); and
- A bathtub with stains of all shades of grey and brown (see photo).
Quite tragicomically, during our 5-day stay, not once did we have a full set of towels in our bathroom when returning to the hotel in the evening, our theory being that the hotel has not bothered to buy enough towels for all the rooms.
The price is cheap, 50 euros/night with taxes, but definitely not worth the pain. There are plenty of equally priced and better hotels in Dubai (check e.g. Dream Palace Hotel in Deira).
In an attempt to write something positive, the Internet connection was ok and reasonably priced (compared to many other hotels) at 45 Dh/24 h and 200 Dh/5 days. The room had a washing machine and a rather clean fridge/freezer, and… well… you get a TV set with four fully-functioning channels! And free parking, yay...
