“Nothing fancy but decent-sized rooms and a good value for Dubai”

My company uses the Rolla Residence for crew members joining or leaving their ships stationed in the Mid-East, so I usually have 1 to 3 night stays here every 3 months or so. The rooms are large with a kitchen area which came in especially handy one time when my ship was delayed and it was during Ramadan, so I could reheat my dinner left-overs for lunch the next day. The breakfast buffet is okay, with polite wait-staff. Many guests are unaware that made-to-order omelettes are also available (no ham of course!). I have never been tempted by their lunch or dinner menu, but as others have mentioned there are many decent Indian restaurants nearby (my favorite is Nawab's in the mall next to Spinney's); also there are US fast food choices in a nearby mall (McDonalds, KFC, etc.) for the less adventurous. The metro is within walking distance; as well as the abras (water taxis) on Dubai Creek to get to the Gold & Spice Souk, although during the "warmer" months the 20 minute walk might do you in. The front desk staff are helpful with directions and tours. The beds are comfortable, the showers/ curtain are a challenge to use without soaking the adjacent floor. There is an on/off switch for the shower's hot water heater on the outside wall before entering the bathroom, which some may not notice.

Room Tip: Ask for a higher floor room, away from the front of the building, in order to escape late night traf...

“Clean & Convenient, Bad staff”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 January 2012

Rolla Residency rooms are clean and spacious...It is decent value for money ..plus the convenience of being in Bur Dubai right next to supermarkets like Choitrams, Spinneys etc.. The staff is generally very blunt and sometimes rude too...Specially at breakfast ..One understands that it is rush hour but a customer is a customer at the end of the day. If you ask for anything they give an exasperated look and answer you as if they are doing you a favour. I made multiple request to lety me borrow the high chair for half an hour ( I offred to pick it up and drop it back) and they just rudely refused. They had 4-5 of them in the coffee shop and it was a small window and considering the fact that as a family we had 4 rooms booked almost for a fortnight they could have made an exception. It's not that I wanted it permanently in my room.Feeding a fussy toddler in a busy coffe shop can be difficult.. For most things the staff had an "I Don't care" attitude. The room service food is not so great so I wouldnot recommend ordering anything other than the basic stuff.. Most good restaurants deliver in Bur Dubai and one can call 118 and get the numbers and order than using the hotel restaurant...The housekeeping staff does not clean the rooms so well...if you are on a long stay it's better to once supervise and tell them what you expect. The electricity in teh room tripped often.. Maybe they have a lot of equipment and the supply cannot handle the load. I am still giving it 3 beacuse of teh space and the location.

Room Tip: If you are travelling with older kids , you can take rooms that are connecting

I would recommend this place to anyone looking for affordable clean accommodation. There were 3 of us adults sharing myself, husband & daughter. The apartment we had had 2 toilets, good size bedroom, lounge with large sofa bed & kitchen. The staff were very friendly & were very accomodating to our needs.

“Please read this (and entirely) before you make a decision!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 January 2012

We had booked a studio room in Rolla Residence for a period of 3 days in December. When we arrived, we were told that we had to stay for the first day at another hotel, as due to some sort of miscommunication, they had given our room to someone else for the first day. We had no choice, and the hotel very blatantly asked to move to the other hotel. It was obvious they had to provide us a drop at the other hotel, but they refused to provide so. After a lot of quarelling, they did provide it. When we reached the other hotel, for about an hour, the hotel's General Manager refused to give us a room, saying that he is not answerable to Rolla Residence's last minute requests. So we were left stranded over there, for about an hour or so, after which they did give us a room. We were told we had to come to Rolla Residence back by 2 PM the next day. But the hotel we had to stay in for the first day ahd its check out time at 12 Noon. So we requested a pick up from Rolla at 12 Noon. Again, they whined and refused, but finally sent a pick up at 12 30 PM. When we reached Rolla, at 12 45PM, they said they will give us a room in 2 minutes. But they took a good 45 minutes to do so, again, we were sitting idle in the hotel lobby. We got the room finally, but one day (for which we paid the money) was totally wasted in moving in and out of the other hotel and the other troubles accompanying it.
The hotel room, was good, clean and spacious. No complaints. But we never got hot water. Even after notifying the staff twice.
The breakfast has a good menu, but lacks taste. For example, Baked Beans on toast lacked salt and acidity, whereas the Sambhar prepared was too acidic.
The public bathroom attached to their coffee shop was exhausted of soap and bathroom paper rolls, and it seems that the person who has recently used it did not how to aim correctly, and the hotel authorities did not know how to clean it properly.
We were so overhwhelmed by this turn of events that we did not even feel like trying their amenities, like the swimming pool or the steam/sauna. So no comments on that.
All in all, I will say, miscommunication does happen, but it should be handled with care keeping the customer sentiment in mind, which Rolla did not.

“Very spacious serviced apartment in a residential area”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 December 2011

We booked this room through Emirates's Arabian Adventure for SGD270, triple sharing. The apartment was situated in a residential area with a mostly Indian population. The apartment came with a very large bedroom, a well equipped kitchen ( with very limited crockery ) , 2 bathrooms, an a very large hall where my daughter slept on the sofa bed. The apartment was fully air conditioned but the full height windows facing another building offered no views.

Oh, did I mention there was 2 TV sets, one in the hall and the other in the bedroom. We could not decide where to watch the TV programs !

There was a gym and roof top swimming pool but there was hardly any views from the viewing area.

Breakfast was provided for guests at the hotel cafe on at the ground floor but the food was not to our liking.

There was a 24 hr supermart and Indian restaurants within walking distance. A short taxi ride ( metered 7Dhm, but you pay the minimum fare of 10 Dhm ) to the Old Souq will get you to the Abra water taxi stop, supermarkets and Dubai Museum.

As we checked in on Christmas Eve, the staff gave us a fruit cake , which was a nice touch.

If there is one thing I do not like, it would be that the hotel is not well known with taxi drivers. We brought the hotel card along but the driver drove pass the hotel without realizing it. There were very little foreigners in the hotel vicinity. But otherwise, it felt very safe.
