We stayed in the Shoreline apartments known as Al Kudrawi or block 6. We booked our apartment through dubaishortstay.com and we had apartment 603. DSS had a limited website for information and facts but were ok on the phone (see my other note regard DSS at the end of my review).
Layout and facilities in apartment
The apartment was spacious and suited us a a family of 6 traveling through Dubai for a couple of nights as hotels are very difficult to find with family rooms and 2 rooms at any hotel 4x and above is very expensive in dubai. Al Kudrawi is at the end of the row of first apartments on the right as you drive out to sea on the palm just before the new proposed palm marina site. The Palm is approx 75% finished and there is little construction near Al K, there is some distant construction in the views but no noise from actual construction. The block is however slightly blighted by the view of the proposed marina site to the left looking out to sea, I found this site to look ugly and there was also an amount of general site noise, generators, lorries, water pumps , scaffolding loading etc from below and this would effect any apartment on the site side of the block. We had 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms , kitchen with dishwasher and washing machine and open plan sitting room with dining area and 44 inch LCD tv and satellite tv (although channels available were mostly arabic speaking). There was an entrance hall with separate WC and maids room and bathroom. We had a long balcony which overlooked the palm golden mile road (which was very noisy) and at the very end you could see the burg al arab in the distance from the seating area. 2 of the bedrooms had views of the Al Arab when looking sharply yo the right but I would not consider this a proper "view" of the BAA. Apartment was equipped with adequate sockets etc, a hairdryer, building integrated AC which seemed to work and was silent and the kitchen had toaster, large fridge freezer, coffee perc, large oven with gas hob, a selection of pans and utensils and adequate cutlery and crockery for 6 people (not more) and a small selection of glasses and cups nothing fancy and no champagne glasses ! We were supplied linen and bath towels which were on the frugal side of sizing and not supplied with beach towels.
Location
Aside from the site next door, it was easy catching a cab from ALK by simply walking out front and hailing one. Cost of a cab to Atlantis was around £4, to BAA £6 and to the Souks/Airport £20. Generally well connected to main roads the palm is a good place to see dubai from in my opinion and the Atlantis is a great place for a couple of days out with the kids.
Beach... The rear of the apartments backed onto a walkway a little like venice beach with a wide path between the apartments and a manicured beach. It was bizarrely quiet on the beach and most of the road noise evaporated when you walked down the steps from the apartments. The beach is man made so it doesn't have any fish life offshore or any snorkeling of sorts but it pleasant enough for swimming and as its almost land locked the sea is calm for children or at least was in feb and around 24 degC so a little chilly, sand is a little gravel like and grey, not deep fine golden or white like many natural beaches. The beach is dropped into the shade from 230pm due to the height of the apartments, I expect this is useful in high ambient temps. Every 2nd block of apartments there is a swimming pool and restaurant with pool bars. The pools were around 23degC a little chilly but were lifeguarded but a team of exceptional lifeguards who were friendly and very hot on the safety of the children, each pool had a child pool area approx 2ft deep. Sunloungers were available on the beach although you had to be up early to get one, loungers were usually available all day at the pools and bars.
There was a great view of the BAA from the whole promenade, bars and swimming pools.
Eat/Drink.... The restaurants are ok and the bars serve a good selection of drinks and draught Heineken. An adult meal is around £12 and child £5 exc drinks. G&T was around £6 and Draught HK £5 a pint all about the mid range rate for dubai. There is a childs play park between the Al Kudrawi pool/bar and the next (BidiBondi) but it is a little feeble and our children mostly enjoyed the beach. Food very varied , nothing extravagant but a good selection. The poolside bars had a strange rule of serving food in plastic takeaway tubs if you were eating at the pool bar which I found strange as the tables at the pool bar were not near to the pool. But this was useful if you wanted to eat in your apartment. There was a ok store selling most things you would need for a self catered holiday and a bakery which was selling fresh bread, pastries and croissants daily. Bakery was very respectably priced and the store was not overpriced for a convenience store. A ATM was available in the entrance to block no 5 and reliable.
Childcare
DSS were able to arrange childcare for babysitting in the evenings which was approx. £8 per hour and we had 2 very nice ladies from the Philippines that the children got on very well with.
Overall
We were a little disappointed with the apartment for the following reasons:
It felt a little worn and dated with a number of broken items, although less than 10 years old i believe.
One lift was operational (out of 2) which was rather tedious at busy times.
Some kind of water damage was evident to internal doors, balcony and hallways in the apartments apparently the result of a storm. Which made it a little scruffy.
It was sold to us as having an clear view of the BAA and our balcony overlooking the beach - which it did not
The apartment was effected by the road noise of the Golden Mile and the site next door.
I would not book again with Dubai Short stay. We booked a beach side apartment and paid a beachside rate. I raised the issue of the road and lack of beach view once we arrived and DSS offered nothing but excuses in return for me pointing it out.
Things we would do next time:
Insist on seeing proper pictures and an exact location map of your apartment, if you can secure an apartment in the middle at the back of any of blocks 3-6 then I think they would seem to be the most tranquil.
If you want safety and a peaceful stay don't book road side apartments as the road is very noisy in my view, some of the mid road apartments have no grounds and no direct access to the beach.
Feb was a good time for us hot enough in daytime not to be to worrying for the children and slightly chilly at night so bring long sleeves and trousers for the evening.
If your a family of more than 4 then definitely consider an apartment in Dubai you'll have more space, save some cash on accommodation to spend on food and babysitting.
There are lots of things to do as well as spend some time on the beach, top of our list were Atlantis (lost chambers, water park, Nasimi beach restaurant, 1st floor arabian bar at night), Dubai Mall, 4WD Desert Safari, Souk shopping and restaurants. T, lunch or Dinner at BAA.
If you are more than one family consider a palm villa, they are very close together but provide more privacy than apartments
