“Good for backpackers”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 November 2010

The location is very good- central and not far away from Nori wheels. It is plenty of restaurants offering shaorma and local specialities. The hotel is worth his price-clean with hot water only the internet didn't work and the hotel staff couldn't repair it. It is possible to change the money at regular rate and get many useful informations at the desk. The hotel offers many trips around Hama. I recommend Apamea and dead cities.

“You get what you pay for”

The Cairo Hotel is a well located backpacker's residence in the centre of Hama. It is not a 5 blob gem.

I travelled with my wife and three friends as part of our tour of Syria. We are all now in our late thirties and have a fair amount of experience of a large number of hotels in different price ranges across the globe.

I accept that it is cheap - the double room was SY£1400 per night; breakfast is an extra SY£150 pp. The room had three singe beds. As describes by other reviewers, the flat sheet is too small for the bed. The bathroom was falling apart, the decor was stained. The fridge stank. I was bitten on both nights of our stay. The door to the balcony wouldn't close. There was a strange person knocking on our door and trying to get into our room at 0130 of the first night. One of the other residents was playing loud music all night. When our friend went down to the breakfast area, he found one of the staff laying the flat bread out on the sofa to cool down (this was the same sofa where the staff had been sleeping just minutes before).

I was initially going to give two blobs but, having just listed the problems that we encountered, I can only give one - try somewhere else.

“A pleasant cheap hotel in Hama”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 November 2010

This is a well-known "backpacker" hotel with in fact quite a varied clientele. The two brothers who run the place, and the other staff, are very pleasant. The hotel arranges taxi trips to surrounding attraction.

“Grotty but central”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 November 2010

We were moved to the Cairo Hotel from the Orient House Hotel as there was a mix up with our booking. We had a room one level up from reception. It had three beds in the room but each of them had sheets which weren't big enough to cover the dirty mattresses. The room was spacious but the decor was very worn. There was quite alot of noise from the busy street outside the hotel. The bathroom was small but adequate although the shower sprayed the whole floor. We also seemed to have a family of ants. The breakfast consisted of olives, cheese, jam and rolls and was sufficient. The service at breakfast was polite and efficient. We took two trips organised by the Orient House (which belongs to the same family) and they were both good. The hotel is centrally situated so handy for seeing the sites of Hama. We had prepaid for the Orient House so the review is based on having paid £74 per night for the Cairo. If we had been paying £50 less then we may have accepted the low standards of the hotel. Overall we cannot recommend this place unless you are on a tight budget and know what to expect.

“Sleeping on the roof”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 October 2010

This hotel is good option for backpackers, it is located near the clock tower, it is good location for sightseeing. This hotel offers rooms, dormitory and places for sleeping in matress on the roof, it's good option especially during summer, view is really nice. Rooms are clean and comfortable, you have to pay extra for air-condition. Staff can arrange trips around Hama, I was in Krak de Chavaliers, price was good.
