“a quiet retreat”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 September 2011

Not recommending travel to Syria now ('11) but if you do travel to Aleppo try Dar Halabia. Our room had beautiful stone work, thick camel blankets, lovely carpets and a nice bathroom that worked just fine. It was on the upper balcony where you could relax day and night and where a very delicious traditional breakfast was served. The staff was not professional but they all tried to be helpful. Best of all you could walk to all the sites very easily. If you need a car they are happy to arrange one for you at the going rate. Meander around Aleppo and avoid the tourist restaurant stops, find a local place on your own or sample the unique street food that only Aleppo offers.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the balcony level if you like the airy feeling and don't mind your fellow trav...

“really charming”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 September 2010

I found this place by accident when I was walking through the souks of Aleppo. Feeling tired I wanted to rest there for a while and it occurred to be a really good choice. When I entered Dar Halabia, it amazed me. It was the most beautiful hotel I have ever seen in Syria: an old traditional Arabic house with a charming courtyard, decorated with rugs and numerous lamps hanging from the ceiling. Placed in the middle of the surrounding souks, it was so quite, like an oasis. The staff were very friendly and they informed me in details about all trips they organized. I decided to spend the rest of my stay in Aleppo in Dar Halabia and I don’t regret. The location is great and the buffet breakfast - served on a roof terrace as well as evening meal upon request (traditional food). It is a really romantic place in the evening, excellent for relaxation. My room was clean, with bathroom, traditionally furnished, decorated with rugs. Special thanks for Abdullah who guided my trip to St. Simeon for his helpfulness, openness and competence in guiding.

“Overpriced - there are better options in Aleppo”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 September 2010

The hotel looks charming enough on the outside but the rooms are rather scruffy. We arrived with a booking but were offered a room with windows so small - they were literally holes in the wall. We spoke to the manager and got a better room. Still, the bathroom was not very clean, and the shower was a trickle of lukewarm water.
The draw of Dar Halabia is location - it's right in the middle of the souk. On the flip side, when the shops are closed at night, the hotel is difficult to find. We spent 40 minutes one night navigating through the labyrinth!
At 51 euros ($70) a night, it's not really worth it. We came across much nicer places in the Jdeideh area that cost only slightly more and were also within walking distance from the sights.

“Traditional house hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 September 2010

Its location is good, right at the heart of a souq, decoration very traditional, I liked it. My room was small and rather dark, facing to the inner yard but the walls were covered with beautifull carpets, furniture was original old, the bathroom was a bit scraffy but I had hot water and the bed was comfortable. If ever to Allepo again I wouldn't mind staying there.

“Stay away if you have children”

It was our daughter who was molested here. Until management get rid of this staff member I would seriously urge families not to stay here - this is not a safe place for children.
