“Like stepping back in time”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 February 2012

Baron Hotel is one of the most authentic and fascinating places we have ever experienced. It was like it had been frozen in time and we left the Baron feeling deeply privileged having experienced such a truly unique and charming gem - living history! If in Aleppo, do not miss this step back in the times of Agatha Christie and Lawrence of Arabia. It doesn't get more authentic than this!

Mr. Walid at the Baron - a fascinating character in himself - helped organize a fantastic tour just the two of us and Ali, a great driver and guide, from Aleppo to Palmyra through the dead cities, Apamea and Hamah.

“Most atmospheric hotel I've ever stayed in”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 September 2011

One of the most atmospheric places I've ever stayed in; as other reviewers have said it's not up to 5* luxury modern standards, but that's not why you would stay here. The rooms are huge, clean and are furnished with antiques from the heyday of the hotel.
The guy who runs the bar downstairs speaks French, little English, but that's no problem, he was extremely friendly and interested to show us the history of the place, including relics from Lawrence of Arabia and Agatha Christie. A tremendously interesting place.

“A charming hotel with full of history”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 June 2011

As a lot of the other reviewers have commented the Baron has its flaws but none of them should put you off staying here unless you are insistent on 5* luxury.

The Baron oozes character and staying in the hotel is like stepping back 50 years. The rooms and spacious, clean and comfortable. The staff are reasonably helpful and the location is good.

Although you may wish to haggle (especially when arranging tours) you will not forget your stay in the Baron.

“Excellent staff and great location and a sense of Middle Eastern history”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 May 2011

The Baron Hotel exceeded my expectations. It is true that its rooms have seen better days, but our room was clean and comfortable, and we loved having a balcony that overlooked the main street. The feeling of faded glory that one finds in many places in the Middle East was definitely present here, and if you want all the amenities of a modern hotel, this may not be the place for you. But if, like us, you enjoy the experience of history, even with its inconveniences, the Baron is excellent. The staff was wonderful and took a personal interest in our visit. We especially enjoying talking with the desk staff, and with the gentleman who provides travel services for the hotel, and with the bartender. I was traveling with my daughter, who is a fluent Arabic speaker, which was certainly a help, but I could have managed with just my English. We also noted several renovation projects underway at the hotel, so future visitors may find fresh paint and a restored courtyard. The hotel is well located for walking just about anywhere in Aleppo: to the old souk with its winding streets, to the citadel overlooking the city, to the various ancient and modern quarters of Aleppo, where we had some of the best food in the Middle East. I would stay here again without hesitation.

“Full of history and charm with warm and friendly staff.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 April 2011

An experience that anyone staying in Aleppo should not miss out on, unless your preference in hotels is the anonymous hermetically sealed box. This hotel is steeped in history and is so laid back it's like home from home. Faded and threadbare it may be but that is part of it's charm. However it was getting a bit of a sprucing up while we were there with the old shutters being repaired and smartened up and the stone work being cleaned.
It was only due to the fact that we were in Aleppo in these troubled times when so many bookings across the city were being cancelled that we had the chance of a room at short notice, and what a room. The room where Agatha Christie started writing Murder On The Orient Express, next door to the room where Lawrence of Arabia stayed (and left without paying his bill!). The attentive manner of Mr. Walid and Mrs. Luceen left us feeling like we were with old friends. We shall return, inshallah.
