“Excellent staff and great location and a sense of Middle Eastern history”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 May 2011

The Baron Hotel exceeded my expectations. It is true that its rooms have seen better days, but our room was clean and comfortable, and we loved having a balcony that overlooked the main street. The feeling of faded glory that one finds in many places in the Middle East was definitely present here, and if you want all the amenities of a modern hotel, this may not be the place for you. But if, like us, you enjoy the experience of history, even with its inconveniences, the Baron is excellent. The staff was wonderful and took a personal interest in our visit. We especially enjoying talking with the desk staff, and with the gentleman who provides travel services for the hotel, and with the bartender. I was traveling with my daughter, who is a fluent Arabic speaker, which was certainly a help, but I could have managed with just my English. We also noted several renovation projects underway at the hotel, so future visitors may find fresh paint and a restored courtyard. The hotel is well located for walking just about anywhere in Aleppo: to the old souk with its winding streets, to the citadel overlooking the city, to the various ancient and modern quarters of Aleppo, where we had some of the best food in the Middle East. I would stay here again without hesitation.

“Full of history and charm with warm and friendly staff.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 April 2011

An experience that anyone staying in Aleppo should not miss out on, unless your preference in hotels is the anonymous hermetically sealed box. This hotel is steeped in history and is so laid back it's like home from home. Faded and threadbare it may be but that is part of it's charm. However it was getting a bit of a sprucing up while we were there with the old shutters being repaired and smartened up and the stone work being cleaned.
It was only due to the fact that we were in Aleppo in these troubled times when so many bookings across the city were being cancelled that we had the chance of a room at short notice, and what a room. The room where Agatha Christie started writing Murder On The Orient Express, next door to the room where Lawrence of Arabia stayed (and left without paying his bill!). The attentive manner of Mr. Walid and Mrs. Luceen left us feeling like we were with old friends. We shall return, inshallah.

“Time Fades Away. Old-fashioned, but special atmosphere”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 February 2011

If you want to take your stand in a part of history, this is the place. The high ceiling and the dusky corridor will bring you to the days of early 20th centuries. All the facilities are so old, but the central heating works well and you will feel confortable even in wintertime. My fabourite place is the bar, of course. Sip a glass of Araq, not burbon or cognac.

“Great experience, should be tried for at least 1 night”

Staying here is a really unique experience. The exterior is stunning, as is the bar. You could probably soak up most of the glory of the place by spending an evening in the bar but we decided to book 1 night here and then spend 2 nights at the Mandaloun. This turned out to be a pretty good plan as I think 1 night is enough to enjoy this place to the full without getting too worried about the fairly scary looking wiring, the basic bathroom and the very average breakfast. We found it to be perfectly clean though. Staying in such faded grandeur was unforgettable, in a good way!

“You can stay reasonably in same hotel where famous people stayed.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 October 2010

I stayed only one night in Baron Hotel. Receptionist was not so friendly but he gave me good info about the Aleppo, e.g., restaurant, train schedule etc.

The room I stayed was one of the cheapest room but I should stay better room where famous people stayed. My room and bathroom was very clean and could get hot water.

They served simple but nice break fast in beautiful old dining room. The waiter dressed well and he gave me good service.

There was a bar in the ground floor, and it was good to have drink in that Muslim country. Also hotel owner was friendly and he taught me basic Arabic and it was great to kick off my middle eastern trip.

Overall I was satisfied to stay in this Baron hotel.
