“Not the most comfortable place to stay”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 February 2010

Jaliya is reasonably priced, but the rooms in the main building are dark and the bathrooms are cleaned only with water. In consequence the basins are spotty, the mirrors also and you have to remove the toilet paper if you want to have a shower! The mattresses are hard and the towels very thin, However you get what you pay for, I guess. The proprietor is matter-of-fact. Bungalow rooms in the garden look more attractive. There are no good restaurants or cafes nearby, which is a minus, though there is a good noodle stall nearby. Ten minute walk to the heart of Luang Prabang.

“The owner is very rude!!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 March 2009

I stayed at Jaliya Guesthouse for 5 nights and it was ok, the room was nice but they never cleaned it so I had to ask for toilet paper and for them to empty the dustbin. They seemed to be very upset by that which I found odd.
I payed 10$ for the room and I thought that I could maybe get a little discount since I stayed so long and it wasn't high season anymore. But the lady at the reception (who is also the owner) was very rude and said that it was the price Lao people had to pay as well... yeah, right...

All in all my stay was ok but I would never go back again just because there are so many other guesthouses where the owners are really lovely and not rude and in a bad mood all the time... I guess that happens once your guesthouse is mentionned in the LP....

“Beautiful garden setting, decent bungalows”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 June 2007

I stayed at this guesthouse with my partner in one of the bungalows.
The 'normal' rooms were quite simple but the bungalows out in the garden
were private and fairly romantic. Ours had a really comfortable bed,
big wooden chair and newish aircon. Each morning I walked past a mango
tree laden with fruit and smiled. Service was brusque but efficient and
the place seemed to be very popular with backpackers. The guesthouse is
a 10-15min walk from the river and night market but this was not a big
deal for us. We paid around USD13 a night, quite a steal.

  • Liked — well kept bungalows
  • Disliked — service was abrupt
