“Noisy Guesthouse”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 October 2010

The rooms very basic with a step-up bathroom. Beds uncomfortable with springs sticking out. Wooden floor board moves and disturbs anyone sleeping. Endless cricket and vehicle noises. Difficult to get peaceful sleep.
Ants in bread served during breakfast. Guesthouse staff were okay.
Got this guesthouse as part of 8 days 7 night package from their travel agency heritagexplorer
Be WARY of this agency. They DON'T honor their deal.
Had to pay extra for meals as those provided were hardly sufficient.
The other hotels, driver and vehicle provided were okay.
Would never stay in the guesthouse or deal through the agency again!

“We had a nice stay.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 August 2010

My fiancee and I stayed at the Muonglao Guesthouse at the end of July 2010. We payed $16 a night for an AC room, although it appears as though the rates are flexible depending on how many rooms are vacant and whether you ask for a deal. We found the staff to be very friendly and helpful, especially Thavone, the manger, and Mee, who works in the kitchen. The room was comfortable and the fan was strong enough that we only used the AC once, so if the weather is friendly when you are there you may not even need to pay for the AC. The breakfast, which is not included in the price, was not that great, but the other food we had there was good. While it is a bit of a walk to the main drag, there are a number of restaurants near the hotel, including the very popular Utopia, so you do not have to walk too far to eat. Thavone and his colleague Kurt can arrange for tours and bus and plane tickets for you. It is important to note that they do this on their own and it is not an official service that the guesthouse provides. There is a lot of competition in Luang Prabang and sometimes their prices were very good, but other times they were not, so shop around. The only issues we had with the hotel have been pointed out in some of the less glowing reviews found below. The rooms on the first floor are not nearly as nice as the top floor and even though we had a great stay, we would look for some place else if there were only 1st floor rooms available. The guesthouse is a bit of a walk from the night market and most of the restaurants and bars, which isn't such a big deal in the morning and evening, but there is no shade on the way and it can be a very hot mid-day walk. As for the price, there are sooooooo many places to stay in LP and if you shop around and are good at haggling, especially during the low season, you can probably find a more centrally located place for the same price if not for less. One way or another we enjoyed our stay and would check to see if they had a room if we were to return to LP.

“What a gem!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 August 2010

This place was the standout accommodation of our 3 week trip across 4 countries!

We were met as promised at the airport by Kurt who took us the short distance to the guesthouse. We were really pleased with the rooms and the guesthouse as a whole. I'd pre-booked online which was a very straight forward process directly with the guesthouse and had requested a double room + triple room for our kids both with bathrooms and air con (air con is essential in Luang Prabang) with balconies at the front of both rooms so we could rise early and have a good vantage point from which to see the monks each morning.

Most outstanding of all was the way Kurt and his staff looked after us. The other standout staff member was Mee who ran the guesthouse restaurant. They were just great with our kids and we were all a bit teary to leave them after 4 nights.

Please note that this place is IDEAL if you are into guesthouses - not for 4/5 star travellers. This is a genuine experience with genuine hospitality, a little on the rustic side like most guesthouses but very clean and tidy and nicely decorated in a fantastic location.

It turned out Kurt wasn't the manager, the manager was some other person who we never saw! I would say to the owner of the guesthouse if he ever reads these reviews - Kurt is an integral part of the enjoyment we had staying there and was the true manager. This is evident from the previous reviews also.

A great place that we hope to return to in the not too distant future.

“Expensive and disappointing”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 July 2010

My husband spent 6 weeks travelling in SE Asia including three days in Luang Prabang. I booked Muonglao on the basis of some good reviews on Trip Advisor. Of all the places that I pre-booked in Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam it was the only one that insisted on payment in advance.
When we arrived we found the guesthouse didn't match our expectations. We had been staying in very cheap and cheerful places in Thailand ($10 per night) which were much much better (i.e. clean, mosquito nets that weren't full of holes, windows that didn't have gaps that mosquitos could get in etc). The staff, although friendly, were extremely inept and there were numerous annoying mix ups about our booking etc. The guesthouse is in an extremely noisy area and between the neighbours partying, cock's crowing all night (so much for the dawn thing...) and various crickets, geckos etc etc we really didn't get much sleep. We ended up moving to another hotel (one of the ones with an internet cafe on the main street) and it was much cheaper and had lovely, bright, clean modern rooms where everything worked as it should. It was also a better location and quiet despite being right in the centre of town.
I would definitely avoid Muonglao - there are much nicer, cheaper places in Luang Prabang.

“just didn't get why this place has had so many good reviews”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 July 2010

We stayed for 3 nights and paid $28 for a double room with balcony and breakfast.
We arranged pick up from the bus station and we were charged a different price to what was quoted in their email.
The room was dark and had a shared balcony which can get very noisy at night. We had A/C, TV and fridge.Sometimes there was no hot water, the sink was broken and the shower hardly had any power from the water.
There were ants everywhere.
Breakfast was not great,we would have gone elsewhere to have it if we hadnt already paid. The bread was stale, the eggs undercooked, the fruit was over ripe and the coffee was like tar.I love a strong coffee but this was too thick, you had to ask for milk as they give you the powdered creamer satchets.
There was a very pushy member of staff whom i cannot recall his name.On our first morning at breakfast we were knackered after a 15 hour bus journey from Vientiane. He proceeded to sell us tours of the city, all we wanted to do was eat our breakfast in peace.
We booked a boat trip to the Buddha Caves for the following day. However the next morning my partner wasnt well so we couldnt go.We tried to arrange it for the following day and he said we needed to pay an extra $20 as we had cancelled. We reluctantly paid but were fuming.Dont book any trips with them,it is cheaper to book them yourself down by the river for half the price.
There are plenty of nicer places to stay in the town for half the price.
