“never again”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 February 2011

Knowing by former reviews there was a high risk for noise, we asked for a quiet room (we had booked an "superior room" - which probably means we had to climb a staircase.
We heard every noise from our downstairs' neighbors, even their most discrete cough. Come to think about it, we could even see their light through the cracks between the floor boards.

Notwithstanding our clear asking for a quiet room we got waken up every night at 03:30 and at 05:40 because of the bell ringing and/or the banging on the drum from the (very) nearby monastery. Moreover, the first night we "enjoyed" a kind of karaoke event held in a house just across a cycling/walking path. Conclusion : no sleep during our whole stay.

But : when booking via the internet we had to pay the whole amount in advance : in fact the owner has been very explicit about that. So we were obliged to stay there during our visit in the otherwise beautiful town of Luang Prabang, otherwise we would have moved out after the first night. Moreover it is situated at about 20 minutes - half an hour from the center of the city.

The breakfast is very basic : the kind of thing you expect in a guesthouse not in a quote unquote Boutique Hotel.

We paid 396,00 US$ for the 3 nights, while we paid 420 US$ for a four night stay at a Vientiane 5-star hotel in Vientiane (including a full breakfast - gym - swimming pool).

So price/quality is absolutely bad. We then compared to other hotels in Luang Prabang and the only advice we can give to other travelers to that wonderful city : stay out of it.

The only positive point we can mention is the gentleness of the staff.

“If you don t want to sleep, it is a good hotel!”

We staid one night in this hotel. Of course it is very charming these old buildings but rooms are very very noisy! in evening, you can hear your neighbours speaking and upstairs neighbours walking... and during the night ( 4 or 5 AM), this is the wake up call ( bells ringing) for the monks next door... then they started to cut some wood... terrible night! we were very tired in the morning....
breakfast is average and service not very good for such high price hotel.
Staff didn t make a lot of efforts to arrange a good stay for us, I think they prefer group travelers, with people never complaining....

“Peaceful hotel on the edge of town”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 February 2011

We loved the position and the peaceful garden close enough to the city to walk but far enough out to be quiet. Our first room faced the old bridge and we found it noisy as the scooters seemed to keep driving past through the night. However the hotel were happy to move us to a fantastic room over the reception area. It was designed like a Lao house with separate bedroom, bathroom and sitting area - wonderful for chilling in the afternoon. Good breakfasts and friendly staff. WiFi available or you can use the hotel computer.

“Elegant and restful”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 May 2010

With a soothing atmosphere, the Villa Maydou is a perfect place to have a pleasant stay in Luang Prabang for vacation as well as for work. The owners are warm welcoming and willing to help. The restaurant serves great lao food complemented by not harassing service. This familial place is worth it!

“Charming and peaceful...”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 April 2010

I am not used to write reviews (and as a French you will forgive my poor English).
But now that I am back to work (…) I feel too bad not to share the wonderful memories we have from our last stay at villa Maydou.
We stayed with my wife at villa Maydou for 1 week last December 2009.
The place was exactly what we were looking at: a charming and peaceful place for a true break we needed. The place seems really out of time and is a perfect (and rare) example of good balance between tradition and modern comfort.
For the traditional part, the hotel is a small-but-cosy place made of two traditional Lao houses in teak wood wonderfully renovated, simply but nicely decorated with home-made products (lao silk and cotton), surrounded by a delightful garden full of various indigenous tropical plants and trees that are beautifully enlighten at night. The hotel is located in a residential lao area where you can enjoy local people casual life including Monks life since the hotel is located just behind a Wat (Buddhist temple).
At the same time the hotel provides all the modern comfort you can expect from a relaxing place: good beds, elegant and modern bathrooms, free internet, excellent tasty food (all-the-most important for French people!) and really kind and smiling staff always-ready to help!
What about the location? The hotel is indeed a little far away from the centre of the town but we used the bicycles provided for free by the hotel. I am not a biker but I found it really nice in Luang Prabang: almost flat everywhere, no or few cars, you can stop everywhere… what about the 15 minutes walk along the river?...
What about the price? Some of the reviewers found it too expensive… well, good taste worth it.
